.42/.49 a/r CX racing T25 - was that a mistake?

Guys,

Hoping I didn't make a mistake. . . Wanted a turbo that would provide maximum response (autox), and be roughly 200whp capable on 91oct. Looked at sr20 T25's and GT25r, but in a moment of haste bought this:

http://www.cxracing.com/mm5/merchant...ry_Code=T25T28

Link says 250-300 hp, which I thought would be perfect for my whp goals.. However, after reading the max achieved on an sr20 t25 and a gt25r, I'm a bit skeptical this little guy can do it. What do you guys think?

For context - Car is a '96 w/ a stock motor. MSPNP (gen1), and a standard cast BEGI kit w/ intercooler. E85 is an option, but the idea was 200 whp on pump, and 220 on E85..

the turbine A/R is really small.

the compressor is a T3 wheel, so that's technically a t28.

the turbine outlet is not a common flange, so a custom DP is in order.

Based on a prior thread, 200hp should be hittable.

However, I would not expect much more, and your spool will suffer as compared to a genuine garrett. See Brainy's comments for further detail, especially about the flange (requires a custom downpipe).

subscribed...I just bought the same POS and would like to see 200 ponies as wel on 1.6 NB...but nearing a point which I am close to take it back and get a propper GT2560(full boost at 3300rpm) of a SR 20 motor...I asked the same qeustion and 18psi was kind enough to tell me that I would see 200 maybe a little over at 14 psi but that would be stretching the turbo's limits and you wouldn't see more after that...the spool(reckon should be close to full boost @ little over 2000rpm,just my geuss though) in this POS should be wicked though, reckon for auto X it should be kick ass....just my 2c.

I didn't even realize the turbine flange was wrong, thank you for pointing that out.. I won't be modifying the DP, I will be returning this turbo. Thanks all

curly 02-26-2012 08:36 PM

Are all CX racing DP flanges not standard Garrett flanges? I know some chinachargers were, and I had issues with this one:
http://www.cxracing.com/mm5/merchant...ry_Code=T25T28
but it's a "new" design, and I figured some of the others would fit.

I think a lot of people don't have issues with Godspeed turbos, search for them on ebay. Or buy my greddy turbo, it's a genuine Garrett and exactly what you're looking for. Abe quoted me $710 for a gorgeous manifold/3" downpipe, but sounds like you already have something.

Even godspeed turbos don't have the "regular" t25 flange.
Look at this pic I sent to Godspeed:

It appears that many, if not most, chinachargers have their own weird version of a 5 bolt downpipe flange, which is just a few mm off (at best) from the regular ol one

curly 02-26-2012 10:49 PM

Post #68 shows the difference between the CX racing flange and a Garrett flange.

cr_sti 02-26-2012 10:58 PM

So everyone running these churbo's are modifying their downpipes, or ordering from BEGI? The SR20 looks more and more appealing.

thirdgen 02-26-2012 11:05 PM

The SR20 is very very appealing. Standard 5 bolt flange...my FM cast turbine outlet bolts right up to it. I could include that outlet with sale of my turbo as a package.

Agree'd. Youll hit your 200 hp goal and it will be plenty responsive enough. You'll have fun with it.

pusha 02-27-2012 02:43 AM

hi bro,

I recently purchased two used SR20 T25s with all the factory accoutrements for $50. Deals like that are rare, but if you look around, you can ball out on a budget.

I also bought this to solve my downpipe woes:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/180753514045

Hopefully my DP will be less than $100 to have mandrel bent.

:-)

Again, no reason to fret. You should be able to return that turbo to CX Racing if you change your mind. I know what it feels like to impulse buy :vash:

Braineack 02-27-2012 08:34 AM

fwiw, it's the same exact compressor wheel I have in my china T3.

but my turbine is much larger, and has a .48 A/R T3 turbine housing...so it would be like a .64 a/r t25 sized.

I hit 240hp/240tq.

I'd expect this turbo to spool fast as crap and achieve 200rwhp, but have no top end wahtsoever.

blaen99 02-27-2012 05:44 PM

Frankly, I'm starting to think it may be best to avoid CX Racing turbos.

I've been playing around with one, and testing a thread's fit by hand, we're not even talking finger tight, we're talking I just threaded the fitting in by fingers....it stripped the threads in the oil feed.

Poor quality is poor quality. Although I love their idea for a turbine housing.

18psi 02-27-2012 05:49 PM

Not sure about those, but my godspeed oil feed and return has very strong threads that never had issues.

Also as Brain said: id probably rock this on a 1.6 with auto-x in mind, definitely not a 1.8 though.

OP is returning it though so who cares lol.

I thought the only chinachargers somewhat decent these days are godspeed and speedyracer or something like that.

Savington 02-27-2012 06:46 PM

My first turbo was a .48/.49 T25, an OEM Garrett part from some Pontiac. Standard T25 flanges. Made 13psi at 3000rpm, 200whp and 205wtq. Hilariously good boost response. If I were looking for 200whp and no more, that's definitely what I would try to find again.

GeneSplicer 02-27-2012 07:02 PM

Doesn't sound too far off from my T3 piece together... .42a/r with 50trim, T3 housing with .48? turbine
Was good for 231 on my 1.6 - added a 60trim and I'm at 274, but much slower spool, fwiw.

cr_sti 02-27-2012 08:31 PM

Thanks for the tip Sav, looks like those can be sourced pretty cheap.

Anyone run the Pontiac turbo or similar on E85? Anyone care to speculate on what that would yield?

Savington 02-27-2012 09:00 PM

Maybe another 15whp, if I had to guess randomly.
