I'm only running a 2554R at 12PSI but I guess it was too much for the 5-speed.
Or maybe it was the rumble strip at Pacific Grand Prix (I shifted in 3rd while still on the rumble strip) when there was that nasty sound coming from my tranny. On my way to the pits, it actually sounded like a cash register (ka-ching...).

It didn't split the case, just took a large chunck out of 3rd gear.

Got another 5-speed on Craigslist and $150 and 8 hours later, the miata is running again...

 

inb4 get a 6 speed peasant.

 

I would suspect the rumble strip could have somehting to do with it. Kinda like throwing third while wheel hopping. I sure hope my 5spd lasts when i get my turbo kit done : /

 

if you're tracking it you'll just keep replacing them til you get a 6sp. those 5spds hold up only on the street with careful/light duty use. On the track they die off like rice field flies

 

Get a 6-speed, plebeian.

No but seriously, get a 6-speed. 5-speed + track use at 200whp+ = broken 3rd gear

 

I have a few sitting at my house for this reason.

 

Well I guess I've been lucky thus far...

We'll see how long I can get out of my 5 spd.

 

Makes me glad I snagged leatherface's 6-speed. My 5-speed is a timebomb @ 240whp.

 

Nothing yet at 270, here's hoping it stays that way.

 

I'm on my 4th 5 speed transmission and have had enough. I have the 4.1 rear end (I *think* - 1.8 Eunos Roadster from 1993), and I'm a bit apprehensive about how short the gearing will be if I move to a 6 speed. Anyone still on the 4.3 rear end who can comment?

 

Too short. Change your rear end if you do it. I have 4.10s and a 6 speed and I think its a little short, and I'm not even boosted at the moment.

Also if you have a 93 rear end wouldn't it make that a 4.3?
