What is the acceptable axial (In and out) shaft play on a ball bearing turbo?

 

This question pertains specifically to Garrett sleeve-bearing turbos, and not the turbonetics angular design for more details to the OP. Additionally, this is in a "no oil" situation, aka new or used-and-has-been-sitting.

 

Either mic it or show us a video of the play in the shaft.

I've been told I'm looking for 0.3mm of play on BB, but 3mm (About 1/8th inch) of play on a journal bearing.

If it is 3mm, I salute you sir. The center housing is good to go!

Serious answer: No axial shaft play is acceptable, radial shaft play should be less than ~0.75mm or so.

 

Thanks Sav. The radial play is within spec, but there's significant axial shaft play. This bodes poorly for the bearings.
