BOV question

How normal is it for a blow off valve to be blowing air at idle. And not like a little bit, but a lot. How about when revving?

I noticed today while under the hood that the BOV was definitely blowing quite a bit of air. Should I be concerned?

lazzer408 08-05-2007 09:35 PM

Usually the BOV is adjusted to be closed at idle vacuum. If you are running an afm/maf then it's an issue but since your not recirc. then I assume your not. If you are then you should be recirculating your bov anyways. The valve should open when the throttle is closed but the rpm is above 2000 or so.

you sure it's blowing and not sucking?

I get a nice breeze coming out of it. I checked with the seran wrap trick (carefully) to make sure it was blowing, not sucking.

This is what the sound you noticed last weekend was.

super weird. try swapping the throttle side and open side around.

That was the first thing I tried. No dice.

Thinking I may pick up one of those BOVs that Rob had good luck with, see how that does.

Ben 08-05-2007 10:25 PM

yeah, I should have known that you did.
F-It. You're running what 8-8.5 psi? Pull that boost leak off and let's see what happens. Yee haw.

We should get together again soon and make sure your tune is good. Maybe invite Stan too. Plus you need to drive my car with the new intercooler. It pulls good up top now.

It is a bosch bov? Those open fairly easy. Is it sealing under boost?

y8s 08-05-2007 11:25 PM

do those have two ports or just one?

I forgot to mention. Some bov's that were "inline", like the bosch, work better backwards so the boost doesn't blow them open. In other words put the side into your charge pipe, not the bottom.

That's how I have my Bosch, I thought it was wrong but was too lazy to change it.. oh well it's getting replaced soon enough!

Slidin'Miata916 08-06-2007 03:54 AM

Right now, i have a forge BOV, and the bottom goes to the IC pipe that comes off the Throttle body, and a vaccum hose off the nipple from the top of it. I have an Extra Bosch BOV with a Check valve on it (what ever the hell that is) How would I hook that up If There is two places to hook it up at like the one above?

kotomile 08-06-2007 03:59 AM

the one above is shown as recirc. You just hook up the end w/o check valve to the pipe.

Slidin'Miata916 08-06-2007 04:38 AM

Ok Cool. I wonder how its gona sound.
Thanks.

Nope, not Bosch...it's a stock all-metal recirculating BOV from a 323 GTX. Not sure if it's sealing under boost.

First thing I tried, no dice. Thanks though.

For sure. Hopefully I'll have a TPS by the weekend. Accidentaly got the wrong one, so I have another I ordered yesterday. You still need to drive my car!

Atlanta93LE 08-14-2007 08:51 PM

With the TPS working like a champ, I played around with this damned BOV some tonight. Conclusion: it is definitely FUBAR. Releasing at any breath of throttle, and not releasing during shifts. So I took it off. Holy compressor surge, Batman! Better get me a new BOV! I like a gentle "whoosh;" nothing fancy, nothing expensive, but something cheap and easy to plumb in. I'm thinking the cheap ebay BOV (purple :vash:) that Rob found and had success with. Any other thoughts?

Stay FAR away from the Greddy r/s-wanna-be bovs off ebay. I popped it in a week.
