butt joint style exhaust band clamp
 
So there are 2 styles of band clamps.

Do you guys think one works as well as the other?

The 'butt joint" type

"360 degree sealing and good looks to boot.
These band-style exhaust clamps give you a 360 degree seal that won't leak. This particular style was created to "butt-joint" two pipes of the same diameter together--without the need to fit one pipe inside the other.

And the regular lap joint kind:

Pretty sure I'd rather have the first type. One, it's easier. I won't have to expand the pipes to fit them. This part actually makes something easier as I can just cut, butt the pieces to each other, and clamp. Besides, if you slip fit them, they mostly seal anyways. Well, I slip fitted mine in a coupler places and now I've been wanting to get the band clamp thing like the first one so that stuff can be disassembled without having slide back the exhaust to remove the slip fit.

Choice 1 is the clear winner.

I have one of each in my exhaust. I have a slip-fit at the end of the dp, and a butt-joint a couple feet after the cat. I used the same clamp for both, the thin metal just stretched over the flared end of the dp so it seals it up pretty well.

+1 the thin metal of number 1 will stretch. number two is redundant.

Kinda what I was thinking...depends on what your situation is. Obviously if your pipes are different diameter's the first won't work...right?

The cuts in the pipe haven't been made yet, and they can be made either way. Thus my question really is, which joint is better?

depending on the component....most mufflers and resonators are made to be slightly larger than your pipes to slip over top.

I used the butt-joint bands for these two slip joints:

So the butt joint band clamp is now installed behind my cat.

The exhaust's first hanger was behind the resonator (which is between the cat and the final muffler).

The band clamp cannot prevent the exhaust from drooping at its location. It is strong enough to prevent the pipe from getting yanked, but it's not strong enough to prevent bending.

Exhaust guy had to add a hanger at the front of the resonator (near the band clamp).
