Trying to figure out what this fitting is for and if I need to have it hooked up.

Still working on cleaning up the engine bay, trying to figure out how to route my IC piping and what size piping to use. Shooting for 10 psi with an MSD boost box, cartech FMU, 305cc injectors, 190 HP pump and RX7 afm.

Explain to me, please, why your BOV is the only thing going to the turbo intake.

Looks to me like there's a T fitting pointing straight down (you can just see the red silicone coupler on either side of the BOV hose) about six inches out from the compressor intake. Presumably that's got a filter on it? Definitely a strange routing.

As for the original question, yes, you need to run a vacuum line to the BOV. It's designed to open when the throttle closes, and it does that by sensing vacuum in the intake manifold.

For intercooler routing, my advice is to do it the way FM does. Clock the compressor to point down, run the outlet pipe out into the wheel well and past the radiator.

OK, possible. Is there room for the RX7 AFM down there?

There is room for a stock afm, I'll take a pic of it in a few. There are 2 reasons I hooked it up like that. The first is thats the easiest way with the piping I have now, secondly the filter sits by the steering rack and gets colder air. The BOV is hooked up and works. It has 2 fittings on it, looks like one on each side of the diaphram.

Before I catch too much crap, I know I have alot that needs cleaned up and that the catch can is on wrong. I just havent had time to go get the parts to fix it.

Yeah, that looks like one of the knockoff "Type S" bypass valves, wherein nipples are available at both sides of the diaphragm.

The upper nipple is connected to the manifold post-TB, the lower nipple is connected to the manifold pre-TB, though this connection can be considered optional, to be used when it is desirable to increase the sensitivity of the unit (bypass more and sooner), which would be comparable to removing the softer of the two springs in the "Type R" style valves. The lower nipple can be left VTA if desired.

Too late :giggle:

That intake placement is one puddle away from a world of hurt. I would pull it back up several inches or find another place for it entirely.

thirdgen 12-11-2011 03:26 PM

Why is your catch can mounted side ways?

I have 3 other cars, miata doesnt see rain. I want to mount it straight in front of the turbo, just cant figure out a way to fit it and have a place for the bov to hook up. The catch can is plumbed on the wrong side of the intake anyway, its just to avoid a vacuum leak at the moment. Im gonna reroute it and mount it in place of the charcoal canister.

Braineack 12-11-2011 03:53 PM

I have the real BOV.

upper is going to nipples behind TB, lower post going to the one in front of the TB.

I will hook it up and see how it runs that way. This is pretty much how I want to run my piping. But I want to recirculate the BOV and do the filter a little different

Braineack 12-11-2011 04:18 PM

it requires you adding some sort of vacuum port between the IC and TB. Otherwise just run without the lower port like you have it.

clayton351 12-11-2011 04:23 PM

I have one that is capped off. No intercooler at the moment, I have 3 laying around including a FM one that came with the car but dont like the routing on it. I want to run 2 inch piping but cant find a kit that i like.

Down where? If you route it like that, the AFM would sit somewhere up at the top. I dunno if it'll fit or not -- A 99 MAF fits fine, but is smaller than the flapper-door thingeys.

I certainly wouldn't put the filter 3 inches off the ground like that, sounds very dangerous even if you don't ever intend to drive it when it's raining. Also, the temp of the air going into the filter matters a lot less once you've got a decent intercooler in the system.

The stock AFM is there right now, theres plenty of room. It is a little tricky to get in place but once there its fine. I dont have an intercooler installed at the moment so the temp does matter for now. Im planning a complete reroute in the near future to put the intercooler in so it will probably get moved then
