how much weaker are the d seires honda pistons compared to the 1.6 miata pistons so i know what i got to work with? i know its kinda an odd thing to ask that on a miata only board but i know there are a few ex-honda guys on here

Grr... metallurgy is one of the few things I never quite got the hang of at school. It's amazing how you can do really well in every aspect of an engineering degree, and pooch up just that one class.

I appreciate the correction.

I had a stock hyper piston EXPLODE @ 25psi on my 1.6L. Every other cylinder was fine, but the #3 piston exploded and so yeah.... Anyhow, if that same cylinder had a forged piston it might have survived. A forged piston will slowly melt/have small chunks fall off of it...but its not likely that youll see one explode.

Agreed, I just like to openly admit it so people can't accuse me of thinking I am

so i guess i am just saying i like the stock rods and forged pistons as having some good pistons will allow more tuning adjustability and leanyency. just dont go turning up the boost
that is pretty impressive, so you are running 89 octane with agressive timing and lean burning and it is working well because you have forged pistons? You cant generalize like that though, different makes of engines have various strong and weak points and some have more of one or the other than most. Obviously an engine like an LS1 will be much stronger due to years of research and real world experience. some engines have poor casting on the heads which leads to detonation, some dont. Anyway on the miata, the general consensious is that the rods will go first due to either rpm or power.

Depends on how lean he is running.. there is a range on the other side of the curves (lambda vs egt & lambda vs torque) where you get the same power and EGTs, the only reason it's not common place is that the NOx emissions can't be controlled by a cat since there arn't enough carbons left over for it to do it's thing. I'd have to look up the book I saw that in, it's been a while.
