Comp turbos.
Have any of you tried comp turbos?
A friend with a GTR suggested them and im trying to see what the deal is.
they offer some pretty nice features on their stuff, but you pay for it...
My 28RS just died this week and im looking into other options before i say **** it and toss a new one in.
My main grudge with garrett turbos when comparing to other big brands is the lack of quality in the casting. Precision turbos appear to be a much higher quality casting and such (that being said i have no experiance with them) but dont make anything small enough for my goals (nor 99% of us here)

TurboTim on here is your best source of info for that, he ran a more typical TT setup, with two GT15s IIRC. So parralell rather than series.
Comp. charging is pretty sweet IMHO. I keep getting this idea to do a basic cold-side MP62 and a GT3071 on a built bottom end. Then I take a good look at V8 swaps which would be a bit more hassle but likely much better in overall terms. I doubt I will do either option when I look at it realisticly.
If you wanted to do it with two turbos, I wonder about a setup with a remote mount (the STS that has been brought up in here recently). It would get around some space concerns. The thing is, you would want the turbo mounted traditionaly to be the more responsive of the two, as the one in back would probably be a bit lazy even if it was something like a 2554. So now you have this quick spooler off the manifold, which acts as a restriction and probably hinders the larger one way out back quite a bit. Not to mention the pile of plumbing involved, the oil feed/return issues, etc.
1.8 swap might be a better route, save for having to switch all your stuff.

I am not trying to debate their floor models and their ability to coat things colorfully.
Has anyone had any experience with them?
Their center sections (from friends word of mouth) are supposed to be magical.

They do mention triple ball bearing in a few places with regard to their turbos on that site, I guess as opposed to a dual ball bearing from a normal Garrett CHRA. What I dont see is anything like a comp map or rpm/time data for a given Lbs/Mn flow at a given EGT or anything that would be useful for a spool/power/efficiency comparo.

magical as in on the GTR cars that have had them installed, they actually perform as advertised on the website... spool harder and are quite efficient.
i have an email into them to get an idea what they suggest, and for some literature on them such as efficency maps and wheel specs.

friend of mine just dynoed his saab race car, 604whp, using a comp turbo, not sure of the specs, but it pulled harder, earlier etc than the similar garret unit he had earlier. another friend has put one in his RB26 powered 180sx.. but that is not dynoed yet.. seems to work ok.. does pretty much what they claim it will.. or so it seems so far..

I read that too... it has to be some type of self contained pack and i would assume it would only be reccomended for full out racing... i.e. good for no more than a day.
Although if they could get that to last a year with cheap rebuilds, or electromagnetic feilds to hold an impeller in place while rotating at 100% efficiency... i would be very interested and wait that month.

"Self-contained pack" was used on turbine equipment 30 years ago, which commonly was associated with the term coked-up bearings.
Most importantly, THERE ARE NO COMPRESSOR MAPS. Unless you are willing to go by faith and by people's opinions and words of mouth "yeah dude it gave me so much more power!!" without any proof of flow rates and efficiencies and surge lines and what not that can be used to compare and determine the best application for your motor, I would rather put my spare $1000 elsewhere. The GTX-R compressor vanes and maps look reallllly fine.
I am, however, a big advocate of ceramic ball bearings and less rotational mass.

It would also be nice to see hard spool data compared to a similar dual bb turbo.
Main question here was in regards to has anyone used them and what do they think of it, have you had any issues with it, etc.
I was going to build an engine next month but this put that behind shedule. So im getting a turbo that is ready for a built 1.6 and limping on the stock engine for a while again... 2860 may be reaching its efficency max where i want to push it to.

Oh, another thing... apparently you can rebuild the triple ballbearing centers for 150$... just some new cartridges and bam... done.
That to me sounds like a worthy investment.
