crank & rod bolts reusable?
Got all the parts for a complete 1.6 rebuild, new pistons and some ARP head studs and even a new crank pulley bolt but i totally forgot about the rod and crank bolts
I tried looking around for some answers but none. So are the crank and rod bolts reusable? |
1. Why are you building a motor with stock rods
2. don't re-use the rod bolts 3. re-use the mains I replacedal hardware due to the wonderful world of cost/benefit. $100 for new main bolts could help me drive home from the track. |
1. im not boosting past 12, if anything im very satisfied with what i have now,10psi.
2.^^^ 3. so main/crank bolts are reusable? |
Honestly I wouldn't use those stock rods either, but yeah.. You can reuse the rod bolts and the main bolts. I wouldn't recommend reusing the crank snout bolt however.
Wouldn't kill ya to get some ARP rod bolts though.. ;) |
jeez crist man, 300 bucks and it will be pretty damm strong. Screw the stock rods, wait another paycheck and get them. Even at 10-12 psi it something you should consider.
|
yeah i know, stock rods are no no, but i drove like 4hrs to pick up a complete 1.6 rebuild kit a few months ago and the dude had the pistons press fitted and mounted so cant get new rods.
The next motor i have sitting in the garage will be fully built in a fewwwww months but i need a fresh for now, my current is really old and shady |
There is no possible excuse for using stock rods in a motor build. None. I don't care if God himself installed them. You take them out, get Belfabs, and put them in. It's retarded not to.

Granted, I've never built a Miata engine, but from the ones I have done, I don't recall the wrist pin ever being an interference fit into the piston. At least give it a shot. Remove the clips and try tapping the wrist pin out of the piston with a dowel.

sorry guys i cant risk "trying" to remove the pins if i dont got the facts that i can for sure.

If it was press fitted did they use circlips or not?
Edit: I am familiar with press fitting wrist pins on rods but never on pistons. Anybody? Edit Edit: You have the motor apart and all of the machining done and don't want to use forged rods because you don't want to wait just a little longer? http://www.wavsource.com/snds_2009-07-06_951659426633085/tv/star_trek/logic_dazzling.wav |
Order rods, take them to machine shop, Give them 40$ and pickup in one day... ;)

If i can remove the wrist pins with out damaging the pistons i,ll order the m-tuned rods today. :giggle: |
Pretty sure the wrist pins aren't press-fitted in OEM pistons, so either you're going to install fucked-up OEM stuff or you're going to buy Belfab rods and do it right.

Lemme tear apart this other block i have and check to see if the wrist pins are removable
