Damn integrated wastegates

How in the hell do i find out how many pounds my WG is? I have a 16g if that helps. I figured shooting compressed air somewhere would do the trick but can't figure it out :dunno:

paul 01-08-2008 04:37 PM

bicycle pump i used just to make sure it was working. some have built in gauge or you can get creative and plumb your boost gauge in line with it

mazda/nissan 01-08-2008 04:40 PM

you just pumped it into the little hollow arm doomathingy?

i tried that with my air compressor and the air blew out where the rod comes out of the large housing

paul 01-08-2008 04:42 PM

huh? i connected a rubber hose to the actuator where the boost line would typically go. then pumped

paul 01-08-2008 04:43 PM

air compressor is way too much pressure. you might have blown the diaphragm now.

1 Attachment(s)
yeah the air came out right here (not my turbo)

Attachment 214906

paul 01-08-2008 04:49 PM

that arnt good

cjernigan 01-08-2008 04:49 PM

Then you blew it.

mazda/nissan 01-08-2008 04:49 PM

well let me go double check, i'll be back

mazda/nissan 01-08-2008 04:52 PM

ok yeah the air is deff. coming out of that spot

Saml01 01-08-2008 04:52 PM

lol, youre an airhead.

Get a new actuator. By default they are usually 6 - 8 psi.

Edit: quick google search proves 8 psi.

mazda/nissan 01-08-2008 04:55 PM

well i gots some lead toys and ait paint chips as a kid

mazda/nissan 01-08-2008 04:56 PM

well i was really hoping something else on this turbo wasn't broken, last time a buy a turbo from a certain member on this board, first the rebuild and now this :robert:

paul 01-08-2008 04:57 PM

testing the wastegate actuator with high pressure isn't a good idea. you can ruin a perfectly good one like that

cjernigan 01-08-2008 04:59 PM

You could have blown out the actuator yourself using too much air pressure. Might have been good in the first place. You're only supposed to test them that way if you can regulate the pressure at the nozzle so yo can adjust it between 3- 10 psi or whatever you like to know exactly what pressure will open it all the way.

mazda/nissan 01-08-2008 05:02 PM

well i had it set at 3 psi, but i wouldn't put it past me to screw it up either:bigtu:

Braineack 01-08-2008 05:03 PM

that test doesn't work anyways.

miatamania 01-08-2008 05:05 PM

What test works then homes?

Care to elaborate?

mazda/nissan 01-08-2008 05:05 PM

yeah i don't want to buy a 3rd

magnamx-5 01-08-2008 06:48 PM

I use a bicycle pump like paul does works everytime i get a indicated 12 psi on all of my actuators with a 9 or so psi reading once exhaust backpressure etc are working against the WG as well. I think that is what scot is talking about. Still using a bicycle pump will get you in the ball park, and if you have a real strong nice WG then will tell you exactly what you have. Oh and yeah your Diaphram is most likely toast now. Try it with a bicycle pump and see though :bigtu: just tee in a boost gauge and watch the rod in relation to boost.

well i've got a purple one coming in from ebay as we speak to replace my mistake, i also ordered those 16g rebuild kits that no one has used yet so i'll yet be the guinea pig again

SloS13 01-08-2008 07:09 PM

who gave you that shit advice? lol Sorry if I was in any way responsible for your misfortune. That's the way I've always heard of it being done.

mazda/nissan 01-08-2008 07:17 PM

no i think i had already tried it once before today, i just had forgotten what had happened, and i'm pretty sure that the first time i didn't turn down the pressure after taking the seats out with the impact wrench :td:

alls fair though, i looked like shit when i tried to drive your car with that damned clutch

Braineack 01-08-2008 07:25 PM

magnamx-5 01-08-2008 07:31 PM

M/N if the ebay stuff doesn't work talk to Nester he can get you 16g parts for a good price.

Whatever man, i know you're the Stig.

mazda/nissan 01-08-2008 07:40 PM

damned right i'm the stig, but even the stig couldn't beat those three clowns when all he had to do was drive while they assembled a car :td:
