Extended Exhaust Studs for Tacotaco?

Hey guys, I have not been having any luck locally, finding Exhaust studs long enough to use with the TacoTaco 1.8 Cast manifold.

Where is everyone getting theirs?

shuiend 02-15-2016 10:49 AM

We have not yet. I would probably just run a long bolt.

viriiguy 02-15-2016 11:23 AM

That is probably what I will have to end up doing. Thanks!

shuiend 02-15-2016 11:25 AM

I don't think even mcmaster carr has ones in the correct thread pitch and length.

Running 40mm bolts from Fastenal on my Taco manifold with a washer on them. Could be 42-43mm, but a 45 bottomed out a touch too soon. Stud would be better but I couldn't find one quickly so ran bolts.

Awesome! Thanks! I have a TON of 40mm bolts in grade 10 and 12.

why not just machine or grind down the tacoburrito?

That's what I'm thinking. If you have access to a milling machine it would make sense. Unless you're removing important structure from the manifold, or creating stress risers that will make it crack.

You could probably even do it with a drill press, if you have a square endmill and some patience.

well considering begi did just that, and this thing is a knockoff of begi, I doubt you'd remove important structure

It's 1/2" of material that needs to be removed. Grinding it would be awful. I thought about bandsawing the ends off thinner, that would be easier, but decided screw it just put different bolts. Faster, easier.

Or just use these: Miata Exhaust Manifold Stud

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1455559158

Replacement Exhaust Manifold to cylinder head stud for the older BEGI Cast Manifolds. The stud is 10mm x 1.25 thread pitch and approx 50 mm long. This stud is longer to account for the thicker head flange on the casting.

bahurd 02-15-2016 01:14 PM

These are 48mm long (as opposed to the "approx 50mm" from BEGI). 10mm Exhaust Studs Serrated Nuts M10x1 25 Manifold Flange 4 Studs 4 Nuts | eBay

or these for a set of 8 (48.5 long) http://www.ebay.com/itm/10mm-Exhaust...NTMSLV&vxp=mtr

I have on occasion made studs out of threaded rod (if it's for something I like, a stainless steel one). Just takes a minute or two per stud to fix the thread in the ends.

viriiguy 02-16-2016 05:21 AM

I don't have the equipment needed to mill the manifold down. Most of my tools are wood working tools :D Those Begi and Ebay studs will do the trick though! Thanks!

For the record, These 48MM ones on Ebay are not long enough. They will be fine for the inner studs, but not the outer ones.

good to know, i also ordered the ebay studs, but havent tried them yet.

I will just use bolts for the outer holes.

How much too short are they?

Based on the BEGI-supplied photo I posted, I count 42 - 42.5 full threads on each stud. At 1.25mm pitch, that gives an overall useful length of around 53mm.

bahurd 02-22-2016 03:58 PM

You want longer; https://www.belmetric.com/s10x125x62...cPath=9_72_174

They don't even have a single full thread protruding from the manifold.
