Feedback on oil return fitting

Hi All,
Noob post, but this is my first time ever drilling and tapping an oil pan so I'm pretty paranoid of messing things up. I was pretty much freaking out over trying not to hit the oil pick up tube with the drill bit! I started installing my FM turbo kit this past weekend and I wanted some feedback on the engagement of my oil return fitting. I know NPT threads aren't supposed to engage all the way as they are tapered and tighten as you thread them in, but I was wondering if I could I get some feedback whether the oil fitting is in far enough. It was starting to tighten up and I'm afraid to keep going for fear of stripping the threads. Should I be ok? Should I take it out and tap it deeper? Attachment 228550 Attachment 228551 I did already run some mineral spirits through it to clean out any shavings and as far as I could tell it didn't leak any mineral spirits, but as I said this is my first time doing this so what do I know? Thanks! |
I always just put the old (not full of shavings) oil in, crank it for 2 minutes in 5 second bursts to keep the starter from cooking, then drain, swap the filter, and run more petrol or whatever through it, then just fill it and run it.

the fitting looks fine, pretty much like anyone else's. Don't overthink it. Some people add some jb weld around the threads for extra peace of mind.

The threads are just to hold it in mechanically, and the oil pan isn't very thick, so you don't need it to engage all that far. If you run the tap too deep it's quite possible to dent the pickup tube with that, so as long as the threads are fully engaged I'd say your fine.
The sealant will stop it leaking. --Ian |
Looks like enough. The pan is only 2 or 3mm thick there. So only a few threads engage anyway.
That is thread sealant and not teflon tape, right? |
