Question First turbo start up

So I started my car for the first time since I installed an EFR6258 turbo. I have a little smoke, I did not before.....Is this normal? I used a oil pan that was already drilled for oil drain and didn't think about it before, but the drain was right where my AC compressor is. I used a 90* elbow and -10AN drain line. The instructions say to use minimum -8AN line and to avoid sharp turns. My fear is the oil drain line needs to be redone......

Your thoughts?

pics of said oil drain setup would help. misc oils from handling turbo parts will also need to be burned off after first start up.

Every time I remove my turbo my car smokes on start just from burning all the grease and **** that was left on the turbo from handling it with your greasy hands and what not. FWIW I run a -10 AN drain line and so do many others. I don't think the size of your line or the 90* fitting is the cause of your burning issues. Swap it out for a 45* if you're really worried about it. But if the smoke is coming off the hot parts in the engine bay and not out of the exhaust pipe then my guess would be just residual grease getting burned off the turbo.

It is coming out the tail pipe.....and seems to only do it when I rev it up. The fitting is a hard 90, not a long sweep fitting. I can't swap it out because it is behind my AC compressor. My only option I see is to tap the oil pan like most people do. Then I can get a proper drain line going..... This sucks like a starving ------! I will try to drive it a little tomorrow and see if it clears up.....Not sure if I took any pics, will check later.

Sorry if i sound like an idiot, but how is your oil drain routed right now exactly? So you bought a pre-tapped oil pan, but it was in the way of your compressor. So where is the oil drain right now?

It goes into that hole. It runs down nice a straight with no low spots and terminates into a 90* cast fitting....

Yeah, drive it a bit. Let it get up to temp and work all the oils and grease off everything.
A little smoke out the tail pipe isn't going to hurt anything.

You could also have a a little problem like he had^ with the oil feed being to big, forcing to much oil in.

Now i didn't take any chances, i went with -10an for my oil return with no 90* bends.

I wasn't thinking about the compressor when I was welding in the bungs.....there was already a hole there so I thought that was the right place.....my bad. I have learned a lot on this build for sure! The oil feed line is -4AN and the EFR has a restriction build in.....

after looking at the 0.04 in restrictor I'm using on my BB turbo, -10 seems like ridiculous overkill. But better safe than sorry.

Also the 90 shouldn't be any big issue. The main thing is the line is always going downhill, which it sounds like it is.

I have a 90 degree fitting on mine and no issues with 25K turbo'd. My line is silicone rather than braided and a similar size to a -10.

I'd drive it a bit more before declaring an issue. How many miles?

I can now rule out the turbo as a problem since I disconnected the charge pipe and I still have the puff of smoke. I don't remember seeing this before the install, but I only drove the engine about 200 miles NA to try and seat the rings before installing the turbo. Makes me wonder if I got the rings seated or if I will be tearing down a fresh engine to try again? Oh well, for now I plan to drive this bitch! Large gathering of Miatas next weekend will be driving the mountain roads of NC,VA, and TN. We run hard a lot of the time and I am looking forward to properly testing out my new suspension and increased power!

??

Oil can leak into the exhaust side of a turbo as well.
