gt28rs 1.6L plans and start :)

Well, I've posted a couple times... I may as well lay out some of the basics with the build I'd like to put together over the next year.

I picked up my 93 w/vlsd a couple weeks ago, its seen much better days body wise... abused/kick/tree'd etc :p. But it only has 90k on the clock, so that works well for me. For this season it'll be autox/tracked (once rollbar/seat/harness is in) in stock form so I can actually learn this car.... For next season however... I want it to evolve... a bit....

For starters.. I just sent my gt28rs over to Lovefab.. and Cody is going to make his first Miata manifold ;). Plans are internal/external gate abilities, Mini-Eq style (check www.lovefab.com for pictures of his honda versions), 3in DP capable... lower turbo placement so the DP is smoother off the hotside and so I can get it aimed nicely for a Vmount setup... ;)

Yes... Vmount. I'll be picking up an aftermarket radiator, and then the fmic/radiator fun begins with all sorts of wierd fitment and such. At the same time I do radiator rerouting, I'll do the reroute off the back of the block also.

I'm really struggling with the EMS though... I'm very tempted to just spend the money for an AEM EMS or Hydra... . but its very much against my typical build style. Most likely I'll be heading towards a MegaSquirt build, its much more in line with liking to have my hands in everything... :p

We shall see how it all turns out. Manifold should be done in a couple weeks... and the rest will mainly wait until winter.

This season really is just for stock driving of the car... first rwd car for me... and I want to know the car as it sits... before it goes way way way past stock.

Suspension and brakes will follow along with the turbo setup. Possibly a cage also, but I'd hate to loose the ability to street the car. I just don't believe in streeting a car with a full cage.... idiotic to me.

And yes... I'll post pictures of the manifold when its done ;)

turbopezz 08-03-2006 07:28 PM

i would like to see some pictures.

Splitime 08-04-2006 05:14 PM

Manifold should be in process over the weekend. Should have some pictures soon :).

Assuming the local Miata he is using for the prototyping is available as planned.. :p

Backed up a hair due to S2K kits. He's still trying to fit the miata in and get it all together.

I'll keep things updated.

Splitime 10-03-2006 07:55 PM

Manifold is in... its quite a nice piece. Working on getting nice pictures :). I'll post as soon as I can manage a camera.

Splitime 10-03-2006 09:26 PM

Small teaser... video camera isn't good enough for real pics yet :p

UofACATS 10-03-2006 09:41 PM

That's ridiculously sweet.

Cool you've actually planned your setup before starting. :)

Kelly 10-03-2006 10:44 PM

I have seen a bunch of Cody's work over on Honda-Tech. You will have a sweet setup for sure.

rotaryjunky 10-03-2006 10:59 PM

Congratulations.

Dang, I should have gone over there and seen the finished project. I am curious to see what it looks like. Mine won't be for some time. When I get a bunch of money, do a low compression build and go hog wild.

Kelly 10-03-2006 11:21 PM

Are we gonna get to see another ramhorn style manifold on a Miata?:)

Splitime 10-04-2006 07:35 AM

I think ramhorn is "played" out ;)

This one is setup for full 3inch downpipe without cheats, off a vband housing adapter. It is also configured for a tial 38mm wg and the outlet is oriented for a vmount setup... so it isn't exactly run of the mill :)

m2cupcar 10-04-2006 09:48 AM

Sounds like good planning- looking forward to seeing the build up. Welcome to the world of rwd. Once you've got some power you'll feel the ecstasy of torque steer absence. ;)
vband is the biggest regret on my setup - regret not doing. Bolt up flanges suck. Vband allows for a degree of permanent adjustbility. That's nice for things like swapping out mufflers... cat...

Splitime 10-05-2006 07:40 AM

As promised. Had a friend take some pictures while I swapped out the rearend for a 2001 torsen... solo it took me 5hrs, I've never been under a Miata before :p Was fun :)

BrokeEnthusiast 10-05-2006 08:43 AM

wow that is hottness, how much lower does that put the turbo for your less 'angular' DP?

Splitime 10-05-2006 09:53 AM

Actually, 2 small changes in design layout. It wasn't the low mount style originally thought about, it now mounts towards the front of the motor and somewhat straight out from it. This allows for a full uncheated 3inch mandrel bend downpipe off the vband adapter I have on my GT28RS.

Also modifed was the mini-eq style... Cody went with something entirely unique instead.

TurboTim 10-05-2006 11:26 AM

Very Nice.

I wonder how he cuts the collector area so nice. Stainless steel weld-ells take a long time to cut and are hell on cutting equipment. There has to be a trick for that.

Splitime 10-05-2006 11:40 AM

Oh, forgot to add to extra happenings with the car.

Kirk Rollbar is in.
Seat brackets for the picture background seat are almost done, then seat and harness goes in.
Just had a Koni Cupkit revalved to SPSS3 (RACE) spec... Ground controls to come later with still undecided custom rates.
Rear swaybar removed.

Soon to depower rack, pull all Cruise/AC/powersteering junk.
Also working on junkyard supplied low-pro style lights, or a midd tenn clone with similar junkyard sourcing. Factory lights and motors just are simple weight to get rid of :)

You're going to have to to fit that beaut of a manifold in there.

Kelly 10-05-2006 12:38 PM

Dude...that manifold is sick.

Efini~FC3S 10-05-2006 03:08 PM

your manifold is teh sex

TurboTim 10-05-2006 04:12 PM

Any way we can get a shot of the insides of the pipes at the head flange? hehehe. I like it. Can I copy it? :ugh:

Splitime 10-05-2006 05:20 PM

My friend might have some. I know he didn't crush the pipe to take full advantage of the ovaled shape captured within the head flange port match. Should make 0 issues though, no blocking, just little more open past the flange then an exact head port match ( i prefer that really as it helps possibly a hair with scavenging).

It was made as a friend of a friend to help me out and such. ;)

brgracer 10-05-2006 07:38 PM

Simply beautiful. :bigtu:

turbopezz 10-05-2006 08:12 PM

how much will something like that cost?is he gonna make them ???

Splitime 10-05-2006 08:54 PM

I believe he jigged it for future usage. Just goto his website and shoot him an email. I know he's been busy with honda kits and such lately (civic/s2k/nsx).

UofACATS 10-05-2006 10:41 PM

Aw, hell. It's even better than I imagined

rotaryjunky 10-06-2006 08:02 PM

That's pretty typical of Cody's work.......completely awesome/sic.

Maybe I will ask for one for the holidays.

turbopezz 10-08-2006 11:47 AM

[QUOTE=Splitime;48300]Oh, forgot to add to extra happenings with the car.

Kirk Rollbar is in.

do you like the kirk roll bar.did you get the 6 point one.problay gonna buy on just wanted to know if it was good quality.:bigtu: or a waste of money:cjerk:

Splitime 10-08-2006 03:25 PM

Fitment was great. Its an older piece and still in fine condition. I had one of their bars in my civic and its fitment was also spot on.

Its a 4point that we might extend into an 8 point (shock towers rear and nascarish doorbars)

magnamx-5 10-08-2006 03:42 PM

a rollbar in a honda now ive heard evrything rolf

rotaryjunky 10-08-2006 09:41 PM

The same fabricator that made that manifold built a 400hp civic hatchback. It was scarry fast. I sometimes cried quietly to myself after I got a ride. That honda needed a cage. And a parachute.

magnamx-5 10-08-2006 09:49 PM

i was just joking. i like hondas, i will drive anything. except for e85 i hope that stuff doesnt catch on. biodeisel is cooll though. but leave my 93 alone.

Splitime 10-08-2006 11:41 PM

Heh, I hope so... my naturally aspirated honda passed evo/m3/sti's all day long at gingerman and other tracks I went too. :p

All with a stock longblock 1.8L honda motor....

Splitime 10-12-2006 04:23 PM

Having some MS buildup issues... I'll figure them out, just sucks :p

On a side note... anyone have a radiator out they can measure for me? I want to purchase a radiator to customize... and miata isn't in front of me this week to measure up the rad.

Height/width/depth and location of inlet/outlets.

Gratzie.

Braineack 10-14-2006 11:53 AM

I'm excited to see your build. That manifold looks rediculously awesome. I can't wait till you blow my setup out of the water and point at me and laugh.

cjernigan 10-15-2006 09:06 PM

Oh please don't stop. I love reading about your setup. It gives me hope for the future and could persuade me to get a GT28RS when you're done. PLEASE DON'T STOP

Splitime 12-01-2006 12:44 PM

not stopping... sigh ;)
Heres visual update from my last day of work.
Like my ex-D1 car doors? Went with less damaged doors, manual and no mirrors. Anyone want power mirrors and windows?
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...3/ebcfc2d6.jpg
Overall.
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...4/ebcfc2d2.jpg
Closer
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...a/ebcfc2ce.jpg
Really Close! Clearance is great with frame/etc... 3in DP without issue.
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...c/ebcfc2cd.jpg
Little visual idea of IC location, it'll be farther forward and lower. IM will have stock TB flange cut off and new one for a Nissan TB added... giving more angle and larger TB.
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...d/ebcfc2c6.jpg

Brakes are off, getting 1.8 brake rotors cut for install.
Headlights are gone, never going back...
Cutting of IM/Rad mount etc... begins next time... if i have time...

rotaryjunky 12-01-2006 12:54 PM

Its a beast!

Do I get a ride when its done because my car was used for the mock up? (for the manifold)

Would be my pleasure. Once its done... find me at Gingerman :)

rotaryjunky 12-01-2006 09:29 PM

Hopefully, I can drive the miata down and Cody can take the NSX. That might be fun.

j00 mean in the grass or at the beach there bud? :P

Splitime 01-08-2007 12:11 PM

Got part of the 1.8L brake upgrade done. Rear brackets from ebay ended up being 1.6L... dealing with ebayer now... i think an honest mistake because of his large parts sales.

Steering wheel on with ebay hub(fit perfectly). Momo Race and its outside diameter is smaller than the inside diameter of the stocker... its perfect.

Gutted my old Power doors... anyone still want power window stuff? Interior wiring/plugs aren't pulled yet, not a priority ( i was gutting for access to door locks)

Door lock cylinders swapped to my 'bling' doors

Went to install my walbro 190... and store forgot the install kit. Its being mailed out, so it'll go in next project time.

Pulled the rest of the AC/powersteering lines and junk. Will depower rack next visit.

Roof has some starting measurements for cutting... aluminum 5way front/back opening RV vent is going into it ;)

WG was test fit, and fits perfectly as expected. Tial 38mm btw.

Radiator for the vmount has been ordered. An Integra all aluminum Koyo will be my base.

Overall, things are progressing... never as fast as I want... but I have tools again... so it the project will march on.

Oh... and a concept picture for my hood... minus the vmount venting I'm still undecided how to do (thinking evo8 style vents, or just large opening with metal trim work) and venting above turbo I'm considering.
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/fi...a-hood-mod.jpg

Splitime 02-18-2007 10:15 PM

MS is almost done, going to whip up the plug/play harness soon.

Radiator is here.
http://www.endlessnightsproductions.com/eBay/koyo.jpg

Chopped up my 1.6 intake manifold and will be welding new runners on soon. Chopped up the 4inch pipe for the plenum.
Got all the aluminum I needed for the coolant reroute and vmount setup.

Also picked up this....
http://i7.ebayimg.com/01/i/04/38/5d/fc_1_sbl.JPG
to make into a custom engine dampener on the passenger side.

Oh.. and found the wing I had picked up for my civic when downforce at highspeeds was becoming needed. Never got to use it... but it'll come in handy for this build :)
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...e/ea9f3e4a.jpg
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...c/ea9f3db2.jpg
Oh... anyone know of affordable servos that could be used in place of the wing adjusters? Having the wing change during highspeed braking would be wonderful.....

Oh, here's a runner welded on shot of the pseudo twin of my intake manifold for my friends 2.2l non-vtec swap in progress. He welded them on tonight while i chopped up the 4in pipe.
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...0/ea9f3ed7.jpg

m2cupcar 02-18-2007 10:26 PM

Your build looks top notch. The intake job is exactly what I want to eventually do to my OE FE intake. Right now I'm running an FE welded up with a 1.6, but it makes very long runners and too much height. - rob

UofACATS 02-19-2007 04:06 PM

I love build threads:bowdown:

Pitlab77 02-19-2007 07:15 PM

how did i miss this the thread :eek5: :bigtu:

Splitime 02-21-2007 10:26 AM

Did I mention my friends brother has a large table CNC machine?
Assuming all goes well... this piece below, will be turned into the baseplate/floor of the plenum and have its own velocity stacks machined out ;)
http://zmove.com/X329.JPG

Also got 2 12inch slim fans in for the radiator. Slowly progressing.

Splitime 03-22-2007 10:39 AM

Working on planning a fabrication weekend on the April 7/8th. Hopefully all major fabrication of the rad/ic/downpipe/wg dump/coolant reroute etc.... will be done by the end of that weekend.

Splitime 03-26-2007 04:04 PM

Thanks to some images posted on clubroadster... I had a great image to photoshop and make a concept shot of where my build is going....

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...b/ea2c40eb.jpg

Wish my paint was actually that nice though :p

VRTSid 03-26-2007 09:20 PM

I love that car(the original). your photoshop looks like it could turn into an even more favorite-R car.

are your plans to modify a stock bumper to get that shape or do you have a sucker lined up? that pic reminds me of another miata but I cant remember the site, really great duct work on that car

Splitime 03-26-2007 09:49 PM

It's a mix of a few formats.
gotxqss from clubroadster for the base picture... giving me the red car... R lip... vented bumper and removed turn signals and the single hood vent.
Then its a blend of kickinoutyo's ducting and another cars vmount radiator.
Its also a bit of the "Fish" (if memory serves me) for the opened up front opening.

They all incorporate a bit of what I wanted from my car function wise. Basically... a fun track car... thats cooling system can handle anything I can toss at it.

The build will be one off though... just no other way for me to get what I want.

LunaticDriver 03-26-2007 10:05 PM

i envy you.... i'd kill for a workspace like yours and your set-up is omg to die for killer. Cant wait to see vids of the beast in action

Splitime 03-26-2007 10:07 PM

I wish it was really "my" workspace. It's a friend who is kind enough to let me keep the car in a family warehouse. If it wasn't 1.5hrs away... I'd be in it every darn day :p (wife would kill me... but she usually understands my car insanity)

heh insanity more like a mental disease

hrk 03-27-2007 12:35 PM

What brought you to Integra radiator? Are you happy with quality?
Where did you source it? If from Ebay, who was the seller?

That is one of my options to be put on trunk of the locost, but the relatively thin core has kept me from pulling the trigger. I presume the amount of airflow will be somewhat limited there.

Thanks
hrk

Splitime 03-27-2007 12:47 PM

It's dimensions fit exactly what I wanted for going Vmount. It has less than 1/2inch clearance in between the framerail... so it fills side to side almost completely on its own.

The one I got was from a private seller and was slightly damaged (see pics, mild dent). I also knew, that since i had to mod it... I wanted a quality core. Koyo is well known for high quality racing radiators... so I just kept an eye out for a deal. Was looking at generics too... but the koyo ebay sale just fell into my lap.

The integra is dual core, its not thin at all.

yadayada 03-27-2007 07:22 PM

Dude, I just, I dunno. I'm speechless. After seeing the liquid sex like welds on the exhaust manifold, I just had to keep reading. I've never read through a full forum post ever in my life until now! I always skim through but I loose interest, but now, you've changed my life today. Great build man.

rotaryjunky 03-28-2007 07:35 PM

Remember, those "liquid sex like welds" are for sale, although he's crazy busy. I like to use my car as a template, makes me feel important. Sorry for the shameless plug. When can we expect to witness this beast of all beasts at Gingerman? I am seriously jonesen for some racing.

Splitime 04-11-2007 07:20 AM

update

Small update, might push the fabrication weekend back a week or so.... the cnc machine is up so I think waiting on the intake manifold will be a better idea.

Here's some quick shots of the wood test piece for my friends baseplate.
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...2/e9f714e0.jpg
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...1/e9f71697.jpg

Mine will have more space between runners and a round "stack" above each. CNC machines are so much fun.
