How bad is it to boost without BOV ?
Hi everybody,
I built a really cheap turbo setup on my miata because I got the car for really cheap and just wanned to have a little bit more fun with it. It,s no my first turbo setup but my first without BOV, I was wondering how bad it was on the turbo? I took a turbo from a saab 9-5 and running about 8psi. I know surging is not good but I,ve seen turbo setup without BOV before so is there anyone that already tried it? Thanks! |

Why not spend $20 and not have to worry about it? Compression surge is bad.

I wont do much mileage on the car, its not a dayly drive and there is a bunch of used turbo for my setup for 50$ close to my place
|
BOV? Just run a flapper with a choke cable. Everytime you lift off the gas, just pull it.

Yeah I am real helpful. Nice negative props. None of which came from me.
If you want serious answers ask serious questions. Run no bov on turbo? I'd say it's fine as long as you don't run more than 3 psi. |

My thread was not about if it is good or not to run without blow off valve. As I explained, i am temporarly running without one and was just asking how bad that could be. I dont know why people like to bash so much, If you dont want to answer, just dont, you dont HAVE to. Thanks for understanding |
Nothing in your original post mentioned that this was temporary...
You can probably source an OEM recirculation valve of some sort and use it without needing to resort to welding/etc. 300ZX twin turbos have great ones. Maybe even one off you old Saab? |

OP, if welding makes things too difficult, get a BOV of this style: https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1415261665 |
I am more afraid of what he is using for fuel and spark control then not having a bov. If spending $50 on an eBay bov then a MS and wideband has got to be way to expensive.

I will install one, but for now I wanna make it run to see if everything works fine, and it,s not for the 20$ BOV but more for the piping to be weld to add a flange for it
but no, your car won't burn up in vodka fire if you run without one. But there's no reason you can't just do it all right the first time. |

I will try to find a used wideband in the classified. I retarded my ignition timing to 4 deg instead of 10deg. Is there anything else suggested for timing? From what I understand the ignition box are useful only for the earlier generations of miata, am I right? (Because the 90-93 has the cam angle sensor)
Thanks |
By retarding your ignition to 4 degrees, you are preventing knock at peak power, but you sacrifice power everywhere else. Get a standalone, control your timing, stop being a noob, and stop posting.

Thanks Can we get pics of your setup? Interested to see what a turbo setup on stock ECU with no timing control at all and no BOV looks like. |
In for pics of PVC charge piping.
