How good is a 1.6 Fuel Pump?

Will it flow enough for 250 wheel hp @ ~12ish psi? Or should I just grab a 255 Walbro HP?

BenR 02-20-2009 02:51 PM

Yes. Not needed at that power level.

patsmx5 02-20-2009 02:52 PM

No.

Braineack 02-20-2009 02:53 PM

Clearing confusion: yes. no.

patsmx5 02-20-2009 02:53 PM

Wait, depends.

Seriously, it depends on the setup. If it's the original pump, I'd recommend changing it anyways as it's surely weak. Since you should change it, get a Walbro 190HP. Also, check out the search function and you'll find that fuel pumps have been discussed more than once in the past.

most of us 1.6L guys don't bother with the pump until we hit 300rwhp....

GT3man2001 02-20-2009 03:09 PM

Don't follow my example, but I still have the stock fuel pump (220k miles) and it went through 12psi (~200whp) on my voodoo setup for over a year with no hiccups.

With my new 2560 setup however, I will be using a Walboro 190.

Edit: only to replace an old pump. Or I may just put a lower mileage stocker in.

Here's the long answer.

It depends on how you want to make that power.

Here's how a fuel pump is characterized:

250 hp would require X amount of GPH which you can easily calculate from the injector flow equation in the FAQ.

From the chart above its quite clear that you will run out of flow much sooner if you are using a higher base fuel pressure (via an AFPR or rising rate FPR).

If you're using larger injectors and the stock base fuel pressure, you have much more headroom. This usually requires an aftermarket ECU.

Get a 190lph hp and never worry about it again.

I'll stay with the stock for a little bit. Will be running stock base pressure. I'll go 255 eventually.
