How many of you changed motor mounts?

I'm about to do the clutch job and I'm thinking its about time to change motor mounts too...its a 1990...120k on the clock. I'll prolly go with the MS motor mounts, and I was just wondering how many of you guys would recommend these and how much of a PITA these are to put in?

Braineack 10-04-2006 10:24 AM

I've always wondered the same. I'm stupid and didn't do it when I had my motor out!!! I did do the clutch then though.

Drive side looks easy as it's right there, may require removing the DP.

brgracer 10-04-2006 10:33 AM

I've heard from people that have done it, that it's not as big a job as it sounds. Looking at how much my motor rocks during starts/stops and on the dyno, it's near the top of my list now as I am sure that mine are done for.

turbopezz 10-04-2006 10:43 AM

pulled my motor out and one was not attached at all and the other has a hairline crack in it.the car has 200k.

miatamania 10-04-2006 11:17 AM

ooo...wow, thats not good ^ at all lol.

Can it be done w/ ramps and a jack...w/ everything attached?

how involved is this...I just keep finding motor pulls...not sites on just changing motor mounts.

miatamania 10-04-2006 11:42 AM

ah...03...didn't go back that far...theres a TON of info on motor mounts on there :D.

I figured you could just do that, but I heard somewhere otherwise.

Sirnixalot 10-04-2006 12:12 PM

i just dropped my motor, the car only has 97k on it but both mounts were almost completely torn

before i put it back in im going to drop in some mazda comp mounts

Kelly 10-04-2006 12:14 PM

The MS mounts are nice. You will notice a lot less shifter waggle when get on and off throttle.

spike 10-04-2006 12:15 PM

I changed my motor mounts to MS mounts and it made a hell of a difference in terms of the drivetrain feeling more solid,I highly recomend doing this mod to any miata and especially a miata that is turbo or supercharged.

F20turbo 10-04-2006 12:18 PM

I did mine when the engine was out of the car, feels more solid.

kung fu jesus 10-04-2006 12:19 PM

i replaced my motor mounts meyself with the MS replacements. it took me longer than most people said it would, but all you really need is a floor jack, jackstands and some wood blocks.

remove the front wheels too. i used a 24" prybar to make adjustments to get the holes to line up. at 100k on my '92, one mount was compressed, the other had tears in the material (not the metal).

the new mounts also brought back improved shifter feel.

Braineack 10-04-2006 12:21 PM

::adds another project to the list::

improved shifter feel...really? hmmm this is def something I'm going to do then, I'll try to do it before I do the clutch/flywheel so I can beat the hell out of it later on ;D

bripab007 10-04-2006 01:44 PM

Yes, I noticed improved shifter feel, as well. Don't really know how much NVH was added, as I installed them while the car was down for building the turbo kit. Driver's side wasn't bad at all w/o an exhaust manifold in the way, but the passenger's side was a small bitch.

VRTSid 10-04-2006 01:49 PM

any solid mounts out there? or are the ms the stiffest you can get?

jayc72 10-04-2006 02:19 PM

http://store.function-7.com/catalog/...products_id/42

Closest I've heard of.

miatamania 10-04-2006 03:07 PM

ouch...I really wouldn't want to run solid...at least not in a street car.

penpen989 10-04-2006 03:33 PM

i did the MS mounts, also the MS dif mounts, all in all it makes it much more stable feeling.

Kelly 10-04-2006 03:41 PM

The MS diff mounts are worth it for sure. They make a great combo.

steelrat 10-04-2006 04:19 PM

I replaced mine when I did the motor swap. They were both pretty much shot.... with 210K kms.... <G>

Definately worth it. Helped a lot with the power 2 -> 3 shift. It doesn't hit the gate like it did before. Although, that doesn't remove the "user error" factor though. <G>

Dave,

VRTSid 10-04-2006 04:33 PM

I have the ms diff mounts, and Im pretty certain my motor mounts are finished.

LOLA - 92 10-04-2006 06:03 PM

Replaced my stock ones with MS mounts in August of '05 - The old ones were pretty worn out and broken.
It didn't take too long to replace them. Did it with the motor in the bay. No problems......:bigtu:

miatamania 10-04-2006 08:30 PM

Good to hear...thanks fellas, I'll see if I can get pics while I'm doing it and post up if anybody is interested.

airbrush1 10-06-2006 10:07 PM

my MS mounts are going in tomorrow.....

driftdevil 10-07-2006 03:25 PM

I would

rmcelwee 10-08-2006 05:56 AM

I would like to remove the cups (for weight reduction) when I change mine out. Anyone do that with theirs?

airbrush1 10-08-2006 08:43 PM

ms mounts made a HUGE difference..... car feels really solid! I'd defenitely reccomend this mod!

miatamania 10-08-2006 08:47 PM

Credit card payement paid...ordering them tommorrow :D

Why would you want to do that just to shave two pounds?those metal cups are there for a reason,if you need to get rid of some weight,a better and smarter alternative would be to just remove the windsheild washer bottle.

turbored 10-09-2006 01:28 PM

spike rmcelwee is the lightweightmiata guy. He's removed far morethan just the washer bottle... anything and everything removable is off that car.

VRTSid 10-09-2006 02:55 PM

yeah I thin kthe metal cups are important but the ac/ps is a good target for weight loss. also carpet and trunk guts all easy and fairly heavy.

rmcelwee 10-09-2006 03:40 PM

Two pounds at this point is huge! My washer bottle has been gone for about 3 years now. As far as I know, the only reason the cups are there are to keep the engine from shifting too much if both the motor mounts are destroyed.

All that stuff is long gone (around 400 pounds removed so far). Believe me, I need the metal cups taken out. Has anyone done this while changing out their motor mounts?

It's been awhile since I've been to your site, I'd forgot how much weight you've removed, that's insane.

What are you at now?

rmcelwee 10-09-2006 05:19 PM

Under 1900 pounds. I don't weigh it very often so I am not sure of the exact amount.

neogenesis2004 10-09-2006 05:31 PM

Your site does not load for me.

miatamania 10-09-2006 08:56 PM

wow...thats a lot of shit taken off...interesting.

Bullok 10-10-2006 03:55 AM

I've changed my stock motor mounts with the FM Motor mounts.

bripab007 10-10-2006 08:21 AM

Yeah, FM sells the same Mazdaspeed motor mounts that're 40% stiffer than stock.

miatamania 10-10-2006 02:20 PM

35% ;).

Just ordered mine from trackdog...74/pair

bripab007 10-10-2006 02:45 PM

40% ;)

http://www.finishlineperformance.com...n&key=MIAD1056
http://miatamania.com/Shop/ViewProdu...60&SortOrder=1

turbored 10-10-2006 03:51 PM

how about a compromise at 37.5%?

bripab007 10-10-2006 04:31 PM

Nope. 40% Take it or leave it.

miatamania 10-20-2006 01:37 PM

heh, you win, 40%

I just installed them last night, what a pain in the ass to do with ramps and a jack, took me about 4 hours, had to remove the exhaust manifold. The passenger side is not fun to get to, but WOW! these things make a world of difference.

My drivers side mount was cracked down the bottom and the passanger side was pretty bad to. I test drove it last night and it feels SO much better than it did. The slugish feeling is gone from the driveline now and shuddering I thought might be comming from a dying clutch is gone too :). the shift from 1-2 at 7k rpms is a lot smoother now too, it just grabs, the transition from one gear to another is a bit different as well...but I like it

It was worth the time and I think this might be one of the most noticable mods for our older miatas....+1 :)

Braineack 10-20-2006 02:22 PM

I was finally approved for my Mazdaspeed account. I should order them one of these days.

miatamania 10-20-2006 03:02 PM

I bought mine from trackdog racing, cheaper/faster than MS...even though I have an account.

google track dog racing

Do a writeup. Take pictures and notes.

Miatamania (aka Moss) looks like the cheapest. $60pair plus shipping. I've ordered from them before and shipping costs are real. I'll be ordering these right meow!

VRTSid 10-20-2006 05:52 PM

anyone make solid? that would be 100% stiffer :)

miatamania 10-20-2006 07:02 PM

but completely unstreetable...

uhhuh, but does anyone make them? seems like the easiest way to be sure you can get rid of the cups.

samnavy 10-21-2006 10:56 AM

Well, mine were $72.85 w/shipping from miatamania. That's $12 for shipping from Cali. Those things weigh 2lbs according to our resident weight expert?

$13 for 2lbs Cali to VA. That sounds about right.

Anybody pay less?

No, but I paid more from Track dog, 'cause I wasn't sure that Moss's were the MS ones.
