I still need to take the exhaust housing to a machine shop to have 3 studs removed ....bUt sh!t keeps poping up that involves money so its hard to get anything done for now

cjernigan 12-31-2006 07:13 PM

You could take the studs out yourself using two nuts and the jam nut method if you wanted. Clamp the housing in a vise, thread a nut about half way on the stud, then tighten another stud onto the stud upagainst that nut then a wrench on the lower nut and break that stud free. Use some PB blaster on that stud though for a little while before hand and possibly while.

shit I wish I knew what that was.....any visual I could go off of by chance...lol

just like that, except without the crazy crescent wrench

dc2696 01-01-2007 06:09 PM

^^word, just soak that shit in wd or pb for awhile first.

RicanmiataRacer 01-01-2007 06:56 PM

thanks guys , I will put that to work when I get home, A hammer should help get loose the studs after hitting with wd40....should be intreasting considering i DOnt have a vice :(

miatamania 01-01-2007 07:37 PM

try using PB blaster its 100X better than wd40 for getting into things.

BAH!:gtfo:

WD 40 is fucking worthless for trying to free something that is rusted.

PB Blast that bitch.

Arkmage 01-01-2007 09:19 PM

you need heat... I soaked mine in pb blaster for several days and still broke a few studs off using that method. Add heat (map gas torch) and they'll come right out.

jayc72 01-01-2007 10:44 PM

Dude you shouldn't need a hammer. Take you time and don't force anything. If you shear off any of the studs flush with the manifold you'll be focked.

If you don't have a torch, you can put it in the freezer. It's not the heat (or cold) that will bust the stud loose, it's the fact that different materials expand (or contract) at different rates.

hmm so it IS the heat(cold) that does it.:gay:

RicanmiataRacer 01-02-2007 05:03 PM

well I managed to free one stud using the nut jam technique....I tried it on the second stud that was pertruding from the exaust housing but no luck with that.....the stud was stripped of its threading....well I guess im going to a machine shop for the two remaining studs

VRTSid 01-02-2007 07:18 PM

still try the pb blaster, even if it doesnt work its great to have handy.

made short work of my exhaust, and rusted cat bolts.
