Intercooler help. Im trying something different

Ive been trying to find the right size for where I want to mount my intercooler which is in the top cut out here:
http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l1...4/DSC08501.jpg

So far, all that I can find that will fit there with minimal cutting is this Mr2 intercooler:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CXRac...mZ330270629408

Ideally, id like to have a 24X6x2.5 or 3 intercooler but so far, i can find anything that size without having to go custom.

The piping ive already got sorted out so im not worried there. Do any of you guys have any idea if that size intercooler exists and where i could get it? Alos, it would have to have the endtanks like the MR2 intercooler because im going to run the piping up through where the hood latch assembly once was. I alreday cut out enough of my hood so I have 2.5 inches of clearance between the hood and the frame. Any positve input would be appreciated.

leatherface24 09-17-2008 04:41 PM

I forgot to mention that im going to be making a shroud for the intercooler. I plan on boosting no more than 10-12 psi so the way i see it, the smaller intercooler would be ok.

Splitime 09-17-2008 04:52 PM

I wondered if that was the reason behind your bigger bumper cut.... heh.

Honestly though, I think custom will be ideal. Getting a core that is close, then buying some generic endtanks to mod or having someone make up a set of endtanks.

paul 09-17-2008 05:53 PM

What front end is that? I like it a lot. NA top and NB bottom? I remember a thread about that somewhere. Is that what it is?

patsmx5 09-17-2008 05:57 PM

Custom IC to fill up that (keeps comments to himself) big hole in the bumper. Anything else will look dumb.

paul 09-17-2008 06:09 PM

From what I can find it's a C West lower bumper cover? Where can that be gotten?

no idea, but that is a sexy bumper.

RotorNutFD3S 09-17-2008 06:28 PM

Minus the big gaping hole in it, if you just glance at the picture, it closely resembles a 3rd gen RX-7.

paul 09-17-2008 06:36 PM

it closely resembles something I'm gonna jerk off to.

Thucydides 09-17-2008 07:10 PM

That is a great looking front end, from the front. Can we have a side view to be sure?

And definately fill that hole completely with a large IC, and perhaps with the help of a pair of big driving lights.

Ben 09-17-2008 07:34 PM

really cool. you get the big brass balls award for doing that.

Bitch, you ain't got money!

KPLAFIN 09-17-2008 08:23 PM

Am I the only one wondering why he would cut a big ass hole in his bumper BEFORE finding an intercooler that would fit nice? Seems like kinda backwards thinking there to me.

tiber55 09-17-2008 08:29 PM

Wings West

Looks like the Wings West front bumper

http://www.andysautosport.com/mazda/...ts/wings_west/

leatherface24 09-17-2008 08:58 PM

LOL I was wondering what the hell the brass balls were for untill i read why its there :) Thanks Ben. Now, the bumper is a C-West piece but be fore warned, its only the bottom half of the bumper that you get. I had to mold it on to the oem bumper and cut alot out of it to get it to fit right. I may do a 24x12 intercooler and fill both the bottom and the top in one shot but im not to sure yet. Part of the alure of putting the I.C. at the top is having shorter piping.

leatherface24 09-17-2008 09:00 PM

oh yeah, the whole car is getting fender flares and getting re painted the way i should have done it from the beginning

Your car looks badass. What is the hood and ground fx? The total package is el niceo.

paul 09-17-2008 11:57 PM

My 25x12 is flipped so the inlet/outlet are at the top for shorter piping. The piping comes in from under the headlights which are fixed.

Looks like it'd fill that hole nicely

Christ Paul. I think you win the prize for biggest front mount and shortest piping.. :D

paul 09-18-2008 12:17 AM

Just looks big. I run the same on my daily as do a bunch of others on here core is 18x12x3.

Splittime has the sick setup and definitely wins for shortest piping.

elesjuan 09-18-2008 12:22 AM

and I'm having problems attempting to mount up an 18x6x2.5 because I refuse to ditch my A/C... :(

Pansie

patsmx5 09-18-2008 12:37 AM

Psh, 20x12x3 core and I have A/C. Short pipes. And I hide the IC while I was at it. Beat that.

redrumracer 09-18-2008 12:44 AM

have you looked into a stock srt4 intercooler? i know that theirs exits like that.

Fireindc 09-18-2008 12:51 AM

Why not go with a traditional FMIC, and an oil cooler in the hole you cut?

Edit: I just looked again, and that is a ridiculously huge hole you cut there. You really need to fill that whole thing with a FMIC or it will look stupid. Use one of the side vents for an oil cooler ;).

I don't wanna hear it.. You live in Virginia, not Kansas. Today it was sunny and 80, tomorrow it could literally snow, then Friday be 110 degrees. Thats seriously how the weather in the midwest is, and traffic here can turn into a bitch real fast. Nothing like bumper to bumper in 100 degree ambient air for a couple hours. Lest not forget about the rain; Nothing makes me happier than having to roll up the windows when its 90 degrees outside with a heavy rain storm.. Those can come out of nowhere. Hell, it rained for the last 2 weeks here. Windows fog up and you can't see shit, plus you're sweating and no air movement..

Plus I've always been a very warm blooded person and can sweat in the shade on a 90 degree day literally doing nothing. To me, Sweat == Misery. :hustler:;)

leatherface24 09-18-2008 08:58 AM

Dude thats awesome. I might just put the larger one in and call it a day. im not to sure yet

Leather, search keyword Rx7...I know they make something like this:

http://s1.promotionsupplies.com/ebay...IC0047-A-3.jpg

15"x10"x3.25" core
21"x10"x3.25" overall

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts...=p4506.c0.m245

with endtanks that point out the top...

paul 09-18-2008 09:19 AM

off center FMIC FTL. Tim too.

If I had AC I'd probably use it 3-4 times a year. Like if I'm heading to a wedding or funeral and it's hot as balls and/or raining. I couldn't warrant keeping it. We can just take one of the other cars for that.

Braineack 09-18-2008 09:21 AM

Leather, this would probably work:

http://s1.promotionsupplies.com/ebay...IC0002-c-1.jpg

18"x11"x3" core
24x11"x3" overall

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts...=p4506.c0.m245

same size as mine and paul's pictured....if you mount it high enough you shoudl have plenty of direct airflow to the rad through the mouth.

KPLAFIN 09-18-2008 09:24 AM

FYI Scott....kinda did a half-way double post there.

I've used it about 5 times this summer, and I appreciated every minute of it. It's also why I painted it black, I wouldn't like a shiny offset FMIC in there, it's more or less invisable, but hey I have some direct airflow to the rad still sucker.

yeah i dunno what happened there...

leatherface24 09-18-2008 09:36 AM

Ive been looking at that ic as possiblity. i want to make sure that ive exhausted every possibility before i actually buy anything.

levnubhin 09-18-2008 10:31 AM

Brain more pics please, I wanna see the connections to the FMIC. I think while my car is down im gonna shove one of those in there and ditch my old Bell/FM IC.

the draw back is slightly slower spool, however my intake temps only see about a 10*F delta during a 4th gear pull.

im lovin that oil cooler set up^^^^^ I bought my intercooler yesterday. After reading lots of threads and everyones input, i decided on the 15x7.5x4. Itll fit great in that opening and allow more air to pass through the rad. Ill be making a shroud for it as well as mounting an oil cooler below like the pic above. Pics of everything will be up as i progress. Thanks guys for the help
