the joys of ebay
i wanted to buy this:
CXRacing Intercooler Turbo 16.5x11x3 Inlets on One Side : eBay Motors (item 390154182346 end time Mar-22-10 16:30:00 PDT) but didn't want to spend so much $$ THEN I FOUND THIS! 16.5"x11"x2.5" JDM TURBO INTERCOOLER MAZDASPEED PROTEGE : eBay Motors (item 140360515215 end time Mar-16-10 18:28:45 PDT) before you start talking smack about the size.....my goal is 200whp and i am limited due to my over the radiator configuration. |
It's more JDM too. Should be good for your goals, at a decent price.

16.5"x11"x2.5" JDM TURBO INTERCOOLER MAZDASPEED PROTEGE : eBay Motors (item 140360515215 end time Mar-16-10 18:28:45 PDT) Hmmmm. In all honestly, looks like a decent unit for your requirements. I've never done an OTR setup, and I don't think I could ever tolerate the frustration of trying to make one work. |
joe....the over the radiator setup is really easy. i'm surprised that more people don't do it. my current set-up (using a MSM i/c with an over the rad config) really looks ghetto and is obviously on the small side.
the goal with the new i/c = putting lipstick on a pig. |
I actually really like that I/C for an OTR setup. Should flow really well, should be enough for 200 hp if it has some decent ducting. End tanks are perfect.
All else being equal, large flow area and shorter flow path should have a lot less P loss than small area and long flow path. |
HOLD ON!! Its an off-road intercooler, you cant use it on the streets!!! You will DIE!!!
Its got a special booster that takes in rocks, dirt, and debris and converts it to JDM speed!!!1! |
Nick, I posted in the "other" site, I actually have one of these laying around. I tried doing the install but it looked like I'd have to hack off too much of the core support to make it work well for me. Can you post some pics through the process?
|
Scott, here is the current setup install. it won't be much different this time around....other than the i/c and switch to 2.5" piping. i will probably be trying to get away from so many couplers. i want to make it look a bit cleaner....gottah find a welder.
Mobbius MiataMob: making progress....slowly but surely. |
Ah, I see what you did there. I wasn't looking to angle back the radiator which i see you did. That intercooler will be perfect for that.
What's the general consensus on flow of the over the rad setups vs. the typical horizontal setup in the mouth of the bumper? |
two things:
1- i just received 16.5"x11"x2.5" JDM TURBO INTERCOOLER MAZDASPEED PROTEGE : eBay Motors (item 140360515215 end time Mar-16-10 18:28:45 PDT) it looks great, packaged perfect, and recieved within 5 days. 2- are you guys doing anything to ensure that all debris is removed from within the i/c before installation? |
They sell some shit on ebay but with some searchin you'll find something better. I got dem tow hooks for like 5 bucks.
|
2. Shoot some compressed air through it. It is probably fine.

A lot of people run them with no problem.. I didn't flush mine for debris before I installed it.. In hindsight I would have, but no access to compressed air at the time.

6 Attachment(s)
my now new and improved setup.
Attachment 198812 ahhhhh, i love this new tool. it made my day fabbing a breeze. Attachment 198813 almost done my first bracket. trying to duplicate it was the hard part. Attachment 198814 here you can see the brackets in their completed, clear coated form. i used some rubber insulators to allow a small degree of movement. Attachment 198815 i am not a jdm fan. so don't start any comments. here you can see how it is very flush with the radiator, without any contact. i used some foam insulation for sealing and protection. Attachment 198816 final IC location. i also have pictures of my completely routed/cut to fit Intercooler piping. it's a work of art really. but my damn phone has no reception, so i can't send the pics here yet. EDIT: a pic just came through Attachment 198817 less than 3' of piping and no hood interference. no notching, nada. |
