just another intercooler install

I saw the other thread and thought I would share my own. the core is 23x11x3 and 28" at the tanks, I thought I would beef up the front of my frame while making a mounting location for the new cooler, and just thought mounting it at an angle would be cool. I cut out the stock sheet metal crush zone and made my own tubular section that is much stronger and should reduce front end flex. Attachment 207664 Attachment 207665 Attachment 207666

Will you be able to put the bumper reinforcement on?
|
yup with plenty of clearance its already done, I just took it back off to mount the oil cooler back in there and to paint it now that is done for the most part, and I'm debating welding caps over the end of my tubes.
|
Wow, nice job. Thats a pretty serious setup you have there. Are you going to try to max out the 15G? :p
|
the piping on the driver side looks awfully low, like it would hit if you went over a speedbump?
any better side pics? looks interesting! |
Notice a difference in cooling? dimensions on pipes, in case someone else has courage to try this?
|
The tubing is much higher than you think, I changed to this around the radiator set up becuase my old set up went under, and even then I never had a problem with a speed bump, just parking blocks. The tube dimention is 2.75. I have not run the car hard enouph yet to let you know IAT temp differences between the new cooler and my old one however I don't think Ill have a problem with heat soke anymore.
Sorry for any miss spelling I'm typing from a phone. |
I'd rather lean the FMIC back to let air go over the IC, into the radiator.
brg crew fo life. |

be cool, or look cool? ;) Agreed ^ I'd put it back at the rad vertically and stick a fat/wide oil cooler up there in that spot.

Actually I have a large scoop underneath the bumper and intercooler that blocks the air from going under and causes the air to flow up through the cooler and into my oil cooler and the scoop supplies air for the rad. My old cooler is in this pic but you get the idea. also the air has to flow up through the fins in this set up, if you mounted it the other way its possible that it could create lift at high speeds and I wouldn't want that. brg 6ul crew is ftw!
is that like 2" of clearance? My pooper scooper isn't that big. You need a splitter. |
Its almost 3", works awesome at the track no heat issues at all I am using a stock rad, oil cooler and my own custom reroute and the car stays cool as idle. I'm running 16psi falling off to 15 before I shift. I need a bigger turbo.

I'm going to run a shorter scooper integrated into the scary-big splitter, shroud everything and hope for the best. |
holy scooper batman!
|
nice intercooler setup any new data on iat and what kind of power are you making with your setup
|
I'd rather run a large splitter and cut the bottom section of my mouth off and put some holes between the turn signals...
|
I think the problem with the two entries is what happens on the other side of the exchangers. IOW if you've got more pressure on the other side of the IC (from the larger entry) it makes it harder for air to come through the oil cooler. And this also makes more difficult to push air through the radiator. Of course this all speaks towards optimal efficiency for each exchanger. Generally there are two accepted approaches - One opening that feeds multiple exchangers, OR an entry and exit per exchanger, no shared exits.
That said, if you've given the car beating on the track in worst of conditions and had no problems, good job. :bigtu: |
The bottom of the mouth is blocked off by the scoop and the IC and the radiator have there own exits and entry for the air so there should be no presure problems

^ oh. More pics would be a bonus. :D I know I couldn't run a scoop that low on my car. The bottom of my OE lip spoiler is pretty much scraped everywhere.
|
I don't run the scoop on the street, I tryed and it almost scrapes the dots in the road. But I don't drive it hard enouph on the street to need all that cooling. I also plan on welding some tube off the back of the scoop for front brake cooling ducting. Ill take more picks as I keep modifying the setup. Thanks for all the good input.

more input ;) or inspiration maybe? I couldn't help myself after looking at the giant scooper, had to finish it out.

I like that, if I try to make it I will make it out of aluminium and post up some pics
|
|
yeah, that thing will not work on the street...i was stupid enough to have it for a day...it ripped my radiator out broke both the fans...
|
Ouch that hurts the only time I drove mine on the street was the night before that pic just to make sure everything was running right for the track day. And yes that is the front strait at T hill
|
would this size intercooler be able to fit standing straight up? I have AC will it still fit? Im looking to get the biggest size intercooler I can fit. But I need AC for now, I'll probably remove it later when my car is a dedicated track car, but for now it stays as its my daily
|
As long as you are willing to cut the front of your frame off. That's why I have the new tubular piece, I also wanted the stiffen up the front end.
