We need real virtual dyno street pulls! The people demand it! :likecat:

Dr.Sep 05-06-2021 05:47 AM

FAIR! NY weather sucks and it’s been pretty crappy but today is nice and planning to drive to work, I’ll see if I can log a nice pull — FWIW I tried on what looked to be a flat road, did a pull, and the plot looked like a sine wave up to 400whp and I know that’s not right, we will try again today on another spot I looked at. Will report back after work

Dr.Sep 05-06-2021 06:04 PM

Okay, so all went mostly as planned! Drove to work today and caught the patch of road I have been eying relatively free so

Had my coffee in one hand, 3rd gear slow down just below 2k rpms and mash it, pulling really nicely and breaks loose in 3rd around 5k, so I quickly slow down and drop it up to 4th and got a good clean pull...but I was only able to slow down to around 2400rpms so that is where the pull starts (not bad for a full cup of coffee in one hand, imho)

I have tried to be as scientific as I can about this, I looked up the temperature and barometric pressure at 7am in Rochester NY today and input them into VD (41 deg F and 30.0 baro), and made sure that the ratios are correct for 4th gear 6 speed 4.1 rear and 15" tires -- the only thing I am unsure of is actual weight, so I tried to be conservative here and put the cars weight at 2400lb and my weight at 150 (accurate). My car is a C package with leather, full interior, the soft-top, and the hardtop was on (41 deg this morning) and a little over a 1/2 a tank of gas so I would be REALLY surprised if the car weighed less than 2400. I will try to get to the truck scale and see sometime soon. SO I think this is a fairly "accurate" VD when emulating DynoJet numbers
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0956f81f49.jpg
350whp 291ft/lb at the wheel
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...c07a45b509.jpg
this includes the shorter 4th gear pull I randomly got a little down the road from the first, started pull @ 3400rpm road wasn't as nice and was at a slight incline, fairly close still

Some things I pulled from the Megalog on the blue line pull:
Start: 2322rpm
Positive manifold pressure: 2423rpm
10psi @ 3725rpm
17psi @ 5653rpm
17.97psi @ 6357rpm
17.37psi @ 7187rpm where my foot came off the throttle
10.9afr and 17.2 spark advance at 7000rpm 17psi

I like seeing those numbers, 350whp Miata sparkles just a little nicer than 300whp Miata (305whp *cough*), but I also feel that is part of DynoJet's thing you know? Here is one data point, as controlled as I could make it, to support that my tuner's dyno reads low (or reads accurately... you choose)

Either way the car feels great, ~500 miles in and so far so good. I did end up getting an OE under tray and followed the FM cutting template which was helpful. It was 100% worth the effort and cost involved, my temps are regularly below 200 now and the highest I have seen since installing is 206 which was after highway and then sitting at a red light for a while and came right back don

der_vierte 05-07-2021 05:33 AM

That is some SERIOUS power, man! Wow... and only 17psi! Congrats, you have one fast miata there.

I wonder what the 60-125 time would be for that, but please don't go into prison :D Maybe go 10miles over in both ways between on/off-ramps, check for cops and then give it the beans!

allofit 05-08-2021 05:36 AM

Wow. Awesome result! Pretty crazy for 'only' 17psi...

I bet that's hilarious fun to drive! How's traction on the 225s when you're pushing on? :likecat:

Dr.Sep 05-08-2021 02:02 PM

Almost 18psi (ha)

Traction is about what you would expect, mash it and it will light up any-time 1st-3rd in a straight line, but really it’s pretty easy to modulate boost with the throttle and the rising boost curve helps! I do really think a 3.6 rear end would make the car more usable all-around but it’s another relatively big purchase so we will see... I finally graduate in 2 weeks and hope to see a big increase in income this year so who knows!

it would be a handful for something like autox, way overpowered for 225s, but that is fun on the street for now. Tires are a couple seasons old so I might consider 245s when I do get new ones depending on price delta

Dr.Sep 05-12-2021 05:01 PM

Just got back from filling up and going to the weigh station:

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...82aa4e69e.jpeg
Full tank of gas (plenty around here I guess) at the gas station with the weigh station — drove maybe 150ft to the scale

Cat scale - fitting for the forum
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...33160b18f.jpeg
2440 on the dot (really do like even numbers) without me in it, full interior, soft top and hard top, and the full tank of gas... not bad

So I think I was pretty close with my 2400 weight I put into Virtual Dyno, had less than a full tank so it’s right in the ballpark!

Amazing numbers! I have a similar 6758 build that is going on the dyno in a bit after riding on a street tune. Hopefully it sees numbers like yours. To be honest though I'm coming from a Gt2560 and the 6758 spool up time is noticeably slower and I'm not too used to it (but boy the 6758 does kick you in the gut after 4500rpms).

I will be interested to see what numbers you manage as well! I came from a tiny t25 turbo and am really impressed with the EFR range, it hasnt been that much slower to spool than the t25, theres a graph somewhere. I wonder when you get tuned how much your spool will improve as timing has a huge impact on spool. I use a rising boost curve because it will try to make 19psi way down low and just blow the tires off -- the way it is set is really pretty tractable and feels like it just keeps pulling

just a weekend update

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...92d1a049f.jpeg
Cars and coffee this weekend, we had the 3 turbo Miatas (k24 efr7163) a nicely done VVT 2560r and mine, and drove together with a newer wrx, viper gts, and that Tesla model3 Performance

ended up doing a couple pulls with the Model3 Performance on the highway, and from 55ish I PULLED AWAY FROM HIM! I was actually really really surprised, I’ve been in Tesla’s and they feel FAST. From a dig, there would be absolutely no shot, but from a roll I am thrilled with that kill. Dude in the viper babies it and wouldn’t run. Watched the k24 Miata walk on the Tesla too - cool to watch from the behind perspective... little bit of a David and Goliath

allofit 05-16-2021 04:39 PM

Very cool Dr Sep! I'm delighted you pulled a Model 3 like that. Almost 300wtq and 350whp is no joke in these cars!

Janky 05-26-2021 08:40 AM

Hey man, nice build! I think we met at the little speed shop cars a coffee a bit back - just wondering, who was your engine builder/machine shop in the Rochester area? I'm already scheming some things after being at 200whp for a few weeks

I was there for sure, thats awesome! So I had my bottom end put together by Drakes engine shop, they were awesome to work with and fair price -- they did all the machining and assembled the bottom end, and I just bolted the rest together. We have a pretty big local miata chat on FB (like 15 of us) if you're interested in being added PM me

Nice to see a Miata with a K24 EFR7163 floating around. I've got a K24Z3 waiting on a sensor, one indycar EFR7163 sitting next to me, and a stripped $800 '04 MSM on jacks that's only needs rear hubs....now that I've replaced everything in the vehicle.

You know if that other Miata has an integrated head (R40, like a K24Z3/Z7), or is it the 4-port (like a K24A2)? With the Z3 I'm going to find the time to take the exhaust outlet, model an adapter to the 7163, and send the file off to a machine shop to CNC it out of a single block.

BTW, took a quick through the thread. Your car is almost exactly how I planned to build a low mileage 1.8 I found, until the sale fell through. Worked out eventually, since I ended up going K-series after realizing the motor was too far gone on this Mazdaspeed I picked up. Going to read through the whole thread over the weekend when I don't have to wake up for work. Appreciate the effort!

Stefan over at Napp Motorsport has the z3 with a 7163. He's already made plans for an adapter for the integrated manifold that works with the EFR. He has a whole build series on YouTube detailing every part of the build. He also makes some really nice parts for the swap that he's been making for people. He has an account here but I think he's more active on YouTube and Instagram (Napp Motorsports on YT and @ermaghrd_miata on IG).

That little group in NY is killing the Miata game haha.

Absolutely, he is a good friend of mine! Helped out a few times with my build, and owes me some custom intercooler piping when hes got some time ha! We love our little growing group - 3+ 300whp cars, half a dozen in the 200whp range, and even some oddball 1.6's running rare jdm parts and 14in rims just because. Join us :D

I think its integrated Z3, but he designed a manifold specifically for it and the efr so you should definitely reach out to him on instagram or youtube, I know he was in talks with K miata to start selling his manifold but unsure when

I'd love too! Too far away to meet up unfortunately. Might get the chance to see these cars in person someday. I was planning on heading that way towards the end of the year when I have to opportunity to take vacation.

Yeah, I'll have to check it out after work. Sounds like it was exactly what I was planning to build.

No joke, that's a baller group you guys have up. I've had issues sourcing parts for months, so I regret deciding to wait it out back when I had the option to get started last March. Little did I know I'd be stuck at home for 4 months looking at my empty chassis with no parts in sight. (>.<)

Anyone following skilled with Closed Loop EBC?

Been running open loop and just adjusting my table for temp fluctuations (Spring NY days can go from 30-80F in a day) and that has gotten old

So I started down the closed loop path, thought I had a decent understanding, moved my values to the bias table from my open loop table as a start, setup my targets, started out in setup to make sure my table is close, started in basic, went to advance etc etc, watched an hours worth of youtube videos on closed-loop (can kind of explain, theoretically, each of the P-I-D's jobs, theoretically)

anyways, the issue seems to be right at my wastegate cracking pressure (14ish psi) I get those big fluctuations from basically 100 duty to 0 duty, and a corresponding 10-20kpa fluctuations which you can feel and hear

so, me, thinking im somewhat adept at systematic changes to get closer to my goal of smooth boost, pretty much started making small changes and repeated pulls (got into a mix with a c7 corvette at one point) and I am hitting my upper rpm target of 18psi consistently and smoothly, but when I run into that 14psi lower target from 3000-5000ish rpms I get the oscillation and I CANT GET RID OF IT! I even went down the hole of "okay, so what if I drop my sensitivity to almost nothing, what happens...now what about all the way up, what happens" etc and just can't get rid of it. I am thinking it is in the bias table at this point, I have 100% duty at anything below wastegate (this is supposed to help with spool, yeah?) but I am wondering if that jump from 100duty to 0 to try to keep it there is creating this.

I will post a screenshot of my settings and a log if anyone is actually willing to help...
