Limitations of Toyota COP
 

I was looking around the COP conversion thread and really never found a definitive answer, has anyone found the power limitation for these coils where you start to see spark blow out? It's a toss up between the toyota COPs and a LS2 setup.

On most setups I've tuned, the Toyotas misfire above 26psi-27psi, 0.8mm gapped plugs, ~11.5 AFR.

I had them misfire at like 21psi. I also had a few COPs die. LS2 coils haven't had a single misfire since I installed them.

IMO, it's not even a contest. LS2 coils you can eve get a baller OEM harness that's already wired for you.

For those that are hovering around a bar, I know there's no power limitations here to warrant the LS2 coils.

However, I haven't bought COPs yet and I'm on the fence about LS2s because I think I can source COP or LS2 for around the same price. Still worth it to go LS2?... or at this point is my justification purely based on future upgrade potential?

On E85 missfire at 15psi. Had to lower the gap to 0.6mm to prevent missfire

I've run them as high as 22-23psi on 100 octane and 17psi on E85 with no misfires. Having said that, if you're DIYing it, go with the LS2 truck coils.

Unless you are on a 90-93 ms1 that has no spark output signal from the ECU, unless of course you want to add that to your ms board.

Huh? Unless your ECU is broken, I can't quite make sense of this.

Hmm, I was under the impression that my ecu does not output a tach signal and the tach is actually driven off the coil. Toyota COPs also have a tach output wire on them, but none of the lsx coils do. So in order to run lsx coils I would have to make a tach output circuit.

Ah, I gotcha. You were talking about the tachometer signal. (I read "spark output signal" and thought, well... I didn't know what to think.)

Yeah, you found the right thread. It's a modification inside the MS, but it's not a hard one.

Yeah, i guess i didn't word that quite right. Glad I'm not crazy, as that was the deciding factor for going COPS vs LSX coil. I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to add, but i really did not want to mess with it and I'm on a stock motor anyways, so no real need for 300+whp capability.. yet.

I already have all the wiring for Toyota cops. Can they go to 18-20 psi on e85 with a small gap and good power? My wastegate spring is 17psi and I'd like to be around 20psi all said and done. Possible?

I just did 325whp on E85 on a 1.6L running a GT2560 with the gategate wired closed at 22-24psi. No problems at all.

If you're stupid enough to attempt 20+psi on an MS1-based ECU, the lack of a tach output is the least of your worries.

Huh, MS1 is more than capeable of controlling a motor with 20psi pumped into it.

Sure it might not idle as nice due to the large injectors, and you'll probably have to have an aftermarket solution for boost control.

Plus if the Toyota COPS don't output a tach signal, the MS1 can.

I had my COPs misfire at 16-17 psi with NGK plugs.

Switched to iridiums, and never had another misfire.

That seems like a lot of power for that small turbo. Is that motor built?
