Manifolds and Downpipes

3 Attachment(s)
Even though there is already the "What's your setup" thread. This might work in tandem if people are willing to post photos of their manifolds and downpipes. Or we could just ad photos to the other thread.

Car: '99 with PS and A/C
Motor: 1.8L
Turbo: Garret T25 with square turbine inlet 5 bolt outlet
Manifold: HKS cast without external WG port/flange
Downpipe: Custom fabd with external wastegate flange integrated
WG: External Tial 38mm

(External wastegates are usually run off of the manifold, not after the turbo like my setup. It is not recommended but as shown in my case, it does work.)

MiaTurbo 11-28-2006 11:34 PM

I have manifold envy...

m2cupcar 11-28-2006 11:45 PM

^damn that's purty^ how big is that wg flange/port?

cjernigan- do you think the hks could be redrilled to work with a t3 flange?

Lol, back on topic guys :p

www.lovefab.com and ask Cody yourself ;)

Its standard t28/gt28rs flange. The WG flange is standard 38mm.

I'll hopefully have mockup pictures soon also, I have aweful vid cam pictures... waiting on friends/girlfriend to send me some real camera pictures I snapped. Was a long sunday work day... rediculous amount of work left... going to be a fun winter :p

Shit. I am embarassed to post my DIY job.

retro 11-29-2006 12:53 AM

Ok, here it is. It's a slag encrusted POS compared to the sexy beasts posted above, but I am proud to say:

I taught myself to weld
I made it myself
It's my first project
It's on my car and it works

I do have some clearance issues as it sits really close to the steering shaft and the lower frame brace. Still, it's good enough to use as I get my car tuned, and I can always make another when I am ready to attempt something better.

M2cupcar: I don't think the HKS manifold could be redrilled. There just isn't enough material in the walls to drill and port for the T3. An adapter could be made or purchased for it though. The problem with that is the adapters for sale are like 2-3" tall and that would raise your turbo so much you would have clearance problems with the hood. If you want a T3 manifold that is cast, the BEGI is a good product and can be bought with an external WG flange.

cjernigan 11-29-2006 12:55 AM

Retro, not bad work for a first time. What manifold are you running?

retro 11-29-2006 01:00 AM

Edited my post above. I have the BEGI, got it this summer when they had the sale on the new manifolds, and I started acquiring stuff from there.

Guess i could have used my brain for a moment and looked at your avatar, thanks for fixing the post.

retro, looks good to me! I am in the process of building one myself, and im sure it wont look nearly as good as yours. What did you weld that with? Ive been learning on a flux core wire welder

retro 11-30-2006 06:14 PM

I got an el-cheapo unit from Harbor Freight. It's 220 Volt, that can run with Gas or flux-core. I had a real hard time learning with the flux core. Went real easy with the Argon/CO2. It was under $200 for a refurbished unit. Gas was $90 including the tank.

I added a new breaker to my fuse box in the garage with a really long cable. All the welding was done in my garage, and I was even able to wheel the unit out to my car that was on jacks in the driveway tack weld the final fitting. The flex joint went last, after the two ends were complete.

HAHAHAHAH that is a lot like mine retro! Mine is a bit bigger though. I havent got a tank of argon/co2 yes but need to. Are you using an auto darkening helmet?? you can get one for like 40 bucks shipped on e-bay, well worth it. they have adjustable darknesses, so u can pick what works for you. Helped me a lot.

adbradley 11-30-2006 06:38 PM

i feel like a minority, everyone has these nice t3s and t4s, and i have a crappy old DSM MHI turbo
