Mega-Awesome-SuperBaller-DailyDriven-StreetMonster Build Thread

So after reading on this forum for months I have finally mustard up the courage to put my build plans out on the interwebz for all of you nice gentlemen to comment and bash me on. My goal is 300-350rwhp RELIABLY. Cough Cough. :noob:

1997 Miata

Bought 6-months ago from a nice man who is a banker and bought the car as a weekend cruiser. Car had 53,000 miles all original. Got the car for a steal so I couldn't pass it up. Since I have owned the car I have done a few modifications that were necessary for me to turbocharge the car.(That has been the plan since day one) I started with MiataRoadster's Short Shifter with a weighted shift knob from Blox Racing and some Ford Motorcraft Full Synthetic Transmission Fluid. Shifts improved DRASTICALLY and would recommend this to EVERY miata owner as a first mod. Then shortly after I moved onto the cooling issue Forced Induction Miatas have with Mishimotos's 3 core Aluminum Radiator, Slim Fan Shroud w/ Fans, Silicone Coolant/Heater Hoses, and 160* Thermostat. I swear in the humid and hot summer we had in Louisiana I have only heard the Fans kick on a handful of times. I am 100% satisfied as a customer and it has a Lifetime Warranty to boot. ;) I just purchased the Clutch Happy Meal clutch kit from Flyin' Miata with a stainless steel clutch line and transmission front seals/gaskets and rear main seal to replace while I am in there. That will be going in next weekend hopefully. As for the future build plan I'm looking at buying a separate long block to build on the side.

-Supertech Forged Pistons
-K1 Forged Rods
-ARP Hardware Throughout
-Blueprinted Oil Pump w/ Billet Gears
-ATI Super Damper
-Ported/Polished Head

wait for it........

-Borg Warner EFR Turbo V-Band and EWG
-Custom Manifold (trying to be innovative and try something different)
-Megasquirt built by someone on the forums
-6 Speed Transmission
-3.9 Torsen Swap

So think I have a solid plan. It WILL happen, just a matter of when. Im trying to decide if I want to buy a 700rwhp cam/nitrous C6 Vette and then build the Miata or just buy a brand new CBR1000RR and have money to do the build at the same time.

I am looking for feedback and all criticism is helpful. No you all cannot scare me away, I do not get butthurt over things said over the internet.

What exactly new or different are you planning to do with the custom efr manifold? I mean most of the efrs are on custom manifold and we're pretty much covered all the good manifold designs.

I want to set something up like this if the room permits for it. Mainly for the reasons of space being an issue for big turbo, intercooler piping, and exhaust/wastegate being dumped out of carefully cut holes in the hood. This caught my attention because it is different and if I can fit a filter on the turbo it will be around the same area where air is directed through the hood to feed the stock airbox in an NA miata.

Let the flame begin..... yes I have a garage and yes I have other means of transportation.

Erat 10-01-2014 06:42 PM

That would never work on a miata. In before cracked manifold.

Well that is a fwd manifold...

Erat 10-01-2014 06:45 PM

I was gonna guess evo or DSM but yeah.

97miatanola 10-01-2014 07:11 PM

I am fully aware that it is a FWD manifold. It is just an example, having the turbo sitting sideways would free up a lot of room that I'm looking for. This is not something that I want to do like everybody else. This is a "zero fucks" build. Im trying to find out if something in this orientation would work. Ill be the test subject. If it will fit in the engine bay and can be made to work I wanna try it.

And if it can't be done then ill just slap on a proven manifold design and call it a day.

Wait a minute...

What?

What?

I want to route the exhaust out of the hood, and a design like this makes it much easier unless I use a manifold that pushes the turbo forward. Having the exhaust routed through the hood with the turbo sitting in the "normal" orientation leaves very little room for that.

hornetball 10-01-2014 07:33 PM

Kinda want to see where this goes. Looks like you mean to give those guys with big-rig exhaust stacks on their pickups a run! Should be quite a show at night. Recommend you use a cheap steel hood for the experiment instead of cutting up that cherry OEM aluminum unit though. The steel will deal with the heat better too.

One comment, you've reduced your cooling capacity by using a 160 degree t'stat. If you're really going to make that much HP, you need all the cooling you can get. Suggest you restore the higher temp t'stat and do a reroute. The TSI's hurt cooling a bit too.

Style bars are dangerous.

18psi 10-01-2014 07:53 PM

Lots and lots of talk. Just like every n00b to grace this forum with dreams of 2000hp and being different

*yawn*

Any reason for a 160 thermo when the operating temps on our engines should be 180-195? Do you hate the engine and want to wear it out faster? Do you want to make the car need to warm up for 30 minutes? Do you want your water temp needle to dive to C as soon as you start driving it in the winter?

Have you purchased any of the serious items you've listed, or is that all just a dream at this point?

And lastly,

The absolute FASTEST way to get people to think you're a moron n00b is to say you want to do something for the sake of being DIFFERENT

I can't even remember how many people came here with those exact words and never amounted to anything.

I hope I'm wrong about you. Thread title did not deliver. Didn't even start.

Every single thing both posters above me said.

97miatanola 10-01-2014 09:03 PM

Tstat will be changed and coolant reroute will be done when built motor goes in. As for the build taking place it will without a doubt happen and it will meet my power goals. Now when the build will happen is directly associated with if i decide to buy that C6 and put the build off a little bit. None of the parts were purchased yet because I want feedback from you intelligent gents. The manifold was just a quick idea and ill probably just pick up a topmount or something. I was just throwing ideas out there. As for dissapointing everybody im not worried about because the amount of fun this car will be will not upset me.

psyber_0ptix 10-01-2014 09:06 PM

I'm here for cat pictures. Where are the cat pictures.

18psi 10-01-2014 09:52 PM

There's nothing wrong with thinking outside the box, just so you know.

As long as "outside the box" is not your main goal, but a byproduct of striving for something amazing.

97miatanola 10-01-2014 10:10 PM

Cat pics soon. Im still looking into a few different options for a manifold, I just really like the orientation of that setup. Ill do some more poking around and ill update more when this clutch goes in.

Erat 10-01-2014 10:13 PM

That setup would never work on a miata...

Any normal manifold setup is already forward facing. If you want exhaust out the hood, flip the 90* up and cut a hole. Nothing new here.

Monk 10-01-2014 10:32 PM

Pshh, nothing new here. I thought of this months ago in the Lazarus thread.:brain:
