My wife is a nurse and works funny hours, so when she works nights, sometimes I'm in the garage until well after midnight. I got a new rattle this past week and found the DP rubbing against the tranny tunnel, so I loosened the bolts at the turbo and moved it over a little... then I did my usual thing, I started cleaning the car. Toothbrush, q-tips, Simple Green, wet rag, etc... When that was done, I decided to make a heat shield. The summer is around the corner and I think I'm gonna need one.

Besides installing a device in my engine bay that is razor sharp on all sides, how'd I do?

What is it made of? I do like the idea of cutting slits into the side and putting the seam where they end, genius! (Drink Guinnes draft responsibly) :friday: I'll have to try that with my own someday when I need one.

Looks like galvanized stuff used for vent ducting?

Yours looks effective, however dangerous it may be. Perhaps it could also be called a turbo/dp theft deterrent.:bigtu:

You could cover it in heat wrap? less chance of cuts and might help a bit? cut...pop rivet...tada?

I think it looks great the way it is though.

It certainly doesn't look bad. You might try and take it out and make a template and cut it out of some stainless sheet, and get it all polished up nice.

You could do the same thing out of a sheet of either galvanized maybe aluminized sheet metal from lowes if you have one near you. Not sure what lowes carries but i know they carry different sizes and thickness of sheet, could do it out of aluminum as well if your cutting/bending tools were limited.
Looks good man, I'd pull it out and just bend the edges over with a pair of pliers to get a rounded edge. I cut the hell out of my hands installing the CAS in my car because i didn't bend the sharp safety wire that holds the heat wrap on my some things around the back of the DP.
Did you use stock bolt locations to mount it?

You can buy a used greddy HS for like 30 bucks and mod it to fit .. much less work :)

It's fairly light gauge sheet metal. It does have that galvanized look to it. I used the edge of my workbench and a ball-peen hammer to knock the edges over. If y'all don't think it's too bad, I guess I'll try to clean it up a little.

There are some fairly dangerous edges where I had to manuever the sheers. The Dremel should make short work of the corners and I'll sandpaper all the the edges to round them off a little. Now that I've got the general shape down... maybe I'll take the time this weekend to make a proper one. I'd really like some thicker material.

sam I think you've got too much "skillz" to do anything ghetto. You actually considered cutting and bending the metal when fab'ing the piece. And of course you used new metal. I used the front panel off my old hvac unit. :D

Looks fine to me just file all of the sharp edges down or you'll regret it later when you are dripping blood on your super clean engine bay :)

Just bend the sharp edges over in a vice. That's what I did with my ghetto heatshied on my Forester XT. Used pop rivets too. No zip ties though. :)

i almost made something like that myself then i though nah ill just get ceramic. Clean it up and then paint it. It will help beat the heat brighten your engine bay and save the paint on your hood all at the same time Good job sam.
