I tried unscrewing the whole thing using vice grips.. but it wont budge! But the top part with the nipple will spin independant of the whole bottom half.

GL i am stumped what kinda turbo is that?

cardriverx 06-29-2007 02:13 PM

well I did some reasearch.. and it seems its a garrett ta0301 or tb0359. If only I knew what the wastegate was set at.

SloS13 06-29-2007 02:32 PM

ive never seen a wastegate like that.

miatamania 06-29-2007 02:34 PM

can't you test it with a compressor?

cardriverx 06-29-2007 02:39 PM

I sorta did, but it came out to like 19 psi!? That cannot be right. If it is, I need to find a way to get the wastegate off. im about to freakin hack saw it or somethin.

Sirnixalot 06-29-2007 02:43 PM

is it from a diesel weasle or some random gasoline oem application?

it might be an interferance fit, dry ice, blow torch and a bfrh?

cardriverx 06-29-2007 02:48 PM

Its from a mercedes 300d or 300sdl (idk what trim), from the 1980s. Like I said im 99% sure its a garrett ta0301 or tb0359. The dry ice and blowtorch is a good idea..

Sirnixalot 06-29-2007 03:19 PM

its a diesel turbo then.....you sure that will work "ok" for you?

if the cap spins freely then you might be able to just uncrimp that, take some coils out of the spring, crimp it back on and that should lower the boost some? no garunteeing you will get a air tight seal though

Arkmage 06-29-2007 03:26 PM

it's off a diesel mercedez... have you checked the compressor maps for it? Since diesels have such a low RPM range they generally require much less flow per liter than gasoline. AKA... a 1.8L Gas engine @ 8K rpm will need the same amount of air as a 4.0L diesel @ 3000 rpm. Now granted the diesels run a higher AFR (17-20:1 rather than 14.7:1), but that's not a HUGE difference in the big scheme of things.

cardriverx 06-29-2007 07:53 PM

One site that has a very similar turbo for sale says its good for cars around 1.6 to 2.2L. It will work, its just the wastegate I need to figure out.

MiazdaBLUE 06-29-2007 09:02 PM

it's ugly that's for sure!!!

cardriverx 06-29-2007 09:43 PM

eh its not that bad.. and I still dunno about the wastegate..

cardriverx 06-29-2007 09:47 PM

well spooledmotorsports said they think the WG is set at 7 psi...

Braineack 06-29-2007 10:08 PM

when you put compressed air into a wastegate line, did you take note of the first reading where the arm moved? that should be closest to the reading of the wastegate.

BUT: The wastegate is opened by two forces; boost pressure x the area of the wg diaphragm + exhaust gas pressure x the wg valve area. Which makes it hard to determine by the simple compressed air method.

Well, I used a crappy way of measureing it, so I would not be surprized if I was off. well, what if I just put it on my car and see what happenes? If I go over 7 psi, I better let off quick..

What is a better way to measure it? Someone has to know something about this WG.

Good luck getting that thing to work on a Miata. I don't see how you run an oil feed line or how you're going to clock it.

I just did a quick search, and the wastegate can be anywhere from 10-16psi depending on what year 300SD you got it off of. That's what a couple Merc forums I searched listed for the OEM boost levels. I've seen some eBay ads for SpooledMotorsports used turbo's and they're prices are absurd.

I assume you're going to have a manifold and DP custom fabricated... I can't imagine you'd be lucky enough that is has standard T3 flanges. I'm sure you got it fairly cheap... but that thing looks like a huge pain in the ass. If you don't mind saying, why did you buy it and what do you hope to get out of it?

acually... It has a standard t3 flange for the manifold, standard t3 flanges for the oil feed/drain, and a 2.5 inch v band for the exhaust. So, all I need to do is fab up a downpipe (already have a begi manifold) and get this wastegate thing sorted out.

PLUS, I just rebuilt the turbo using one of the ebay full garrett t3 turbo rebuild kits (oh it spins soo nice now). It is a standared t3 turbo, just that it has a odd WG and its own BOV (which is acually kinda cool)

I guess I could wait awhile.. get larger injectors and a intercooler setup.. and just run at the 10 to 16 psi it is set at. I dont know..
