Default Need help on my Greddy build.

What's up everyone? I'm fairly new to the forum and want to build on my current base greddy setup and need some advice. I've got an intercooler and piping but the piping rusted in a flood and I need to get it cleaned. Once I get all that squared away and installed is where I really dont know what to do anymore. I want to run 8-12 psi eventually depending on how much everything will cost. I've heard alot about the MegaSquirt but don't have a laptop. I've also heard that the bipes or MSD is a bandaid for an actual ecu. I don't really have that much $ to toss at the car at this point, but would like to do things right. What all do I need so I can run the car safely? I know injectors, but what size, make works well? My fuel pump is the stocker for 1989, but I was told on here it might be fine with a MS(most likely what I'll go with). I figure it'll be peace of mind just to change it. I don't know what pump I'd need, any suggestions? If anyone has a link to a thread or anything let me know. I searched "greddy build" and got all kinds of turbo builds. Any help is greatly appreciated. Here's some pics of the car. Had it since I was 16 and might have it forever. ::Edit:: Just noticed this should be in the prefabbed kit talk. Sorry.

If your wanting to do the build right, you'll skip the bandaids idea and head straight for the megasquirt. It's the best way to tune that and offers a ton of options plus there is a lot of people here who can help you. If your worried about the $ for the megasquirt look for Braineacks megasquirts that he builds. Buy the megasquirt and then save money while you get the megasquirt tuned to buy the turbo kit.

Get the megasquirt and get it tuned and running n/a first; then get some larger injectors 440's etc. Get it running with the larger injectors n/a. Then add boost. This is the best way and if there are problems you are only doing simple steps instead of all at once.

As for the fuel pump the stock will hold up as long as it is in good condition. Alot on here are using bandaids and run high pressure fuel pumps. There are a little overkill if you have an ecu that can tune your fuel and timing.

That car looks great! You'll be happier with the setup and driveability of your car if you do it this way. Do it right the first time! there are plenty of people on here would love to go back and do things over.

Thanks so much for your help. I've already got the turbo kit on my car. Gotta get my piping cleaned and fitted up then get a manual boost controller. My boost should drop with all that piping correct? Anyone on here make the cheap ball and spring setups? Also i tapped my fuel rail for nitrous a while ago and really want to get a new balanced one. I know Jim Bobowski made them a while ago for like 120 bucks. Any input? Also I need to get a new air filter and adapter for my MAF sensor for the time being. Anyone got one laying around?

Need another post so I can PM. Here's pics of what my piping will look like. Mines all kinda rusty bare metal now. But you can see the routing and everything.

I went down the same road. Greddy Kit + JimB piping. Max out the wastegate and it nets you 6psi. As long as you retard the timing everything works fine, although the vortech just dumps fuel past 5K.

But yeah, get a wideband first. Then a DIY MS-I.

I picked up an EEEPC off ebay for ~$150 and its great to tune with. I wouldnt worry about the pump, mine hasnt died yet.

As for injectors, 460cc's are great and cheap for 12psi.

For MBC and blow off valve, ebay. NXS MBC is cheap and works amazingly, lots of people here have used it w/o problem.

Again, get a wideband first.

Oh, once you add the intercooler, get a bosch bypass valve and recirculate it.

I've got a small turbo xs valve I was gonna use. It doesnt recirc though. I just gave away a stock Eclipse GSX one. I might be able to get it back though.

Anyone know anything about Jim B? Is he still around? I'd like to get a fuel rail from him if possible.

God no, he's not around. Until recently, the phrase "jimb" was treated like a curse word and showed up at **** whenever typed. It was a cheap kit that worked, however (and this is by my crappy memory only, I've never owned the kit) everything on the throttle body tube was only JB welded on, the fit was crap, routing was crap, delivery became incredibly slow, and then it just became impossible to get a hold of him.

For the Greddy kit, you want to do a few things right off the bat.

1. add at least a bosch BOV, honestly, compressor surge sucks.
2. replace the wastegate it comes with, anything that fits will work. I went from bouncing between 4-8psi to a rock solid 7 when I replaced mine, best $60 I spent.
3. wideband wideband wideband.
4. heatshield heatshield heatshield.
5. don't expect ANYTHING past 6psi with stock injectors and the vortech, that thing is like dealing with a guitar amp with two settings, 1 and 10.

I've got a fitting welded on the TB tube for my BOV, what are the benefits of rerouting as opposed to just venting out? Idle droop? Anyone else have pics of their piping as opposed to mine. I might just get some bends and fab my own up. I've got a starion intercooler then a bigger one that might fit but it's got 3" outlets on it. I'll get some pics of the 2 and post them up tomorrow.

If you are running the stock ECU, you have to recirculate the bov. If you dont, your idle will suck, and you will go hardcore rich on shifting.

Megasquirt however, you can vta.

Oh you can VTA just fine. Some say a check valve on the BOV outlet will help, but I haven't found that it does. It does indeed go mega rich while shifting, giving me a huge pop every shift at the track. Idle does act a little weird, and there's crappy power off idle (non aggressive starts from a stop). Doesn't matter too much for racing, it'd be annoying as hell on the street I'd think.

Search a bunch for intercooler routing, there's a ton out there. Don't forget "over the radiator" setups, a few of us have that.

I would go with Braineacks megasquirt and some 440cc injectors and just a cheap laptop. I saw one on here for like $50. Get a good wideband LC-1 is what a lot of people like. Also if you dont have a BOV AND Heatshield get them.

I wouldn't go the bandaid route with your goals because you would have to run a ton of fuel pressure and I don't see you saving a lot. The only reason I when with bandaid's is I got a good deal on a kit with them and I don't run much boost

Nah no band-aids for me. I wanna do things right the first time around. I'm gonna have to start hunting for injectors and everything pretty soon.
