New bottom mount set up.

So I just started today with the new manifold build. I had the Greddy manifold and turbo before, but I sold it to a friend and decided to build a new set up. I had a ebay manifold I was going to use but decided to go a different direction so I will just be using the flange for the most part. this is the ebay mani.
here it is after the first cuts
these are the collector pieces, I need to take them to work and use the belt sander to get them finished up and get a better fit. the turbo will be centered for the most part on the head so the bends for the collector for cyl 2 and 3 stick out at an angle while the bends for 1 and 4 are parallel to the head, Ill have a better pic once I tack them up next week. I will be very similar to some of the 3D drawings in the other thread.
This is just a pic of the new Holset and the old Greddy turbo.

Holy shit that holset is BIG. What kind of power goals do you have in mind?

greenday3437 11-15-2009 03:29 AM

If that's the manifold I think that it is, I would be worried about it cracking. I know a lot of people have had problems with it before, but hopefully since you are only using a couple of inches of the original then you will be fine.

You're going to hang that thing off 16/18ga tube? You're a fabricator, why not start with sch10 right off the flange?

IIRC those tubes are 2", while the sch10 pipe is 1.68" ID, that 1/4 inch step down can't be good for flow either

Like I said that was just my first cut, I didn't know the how thin it was until I cut it, the chop saw went through it quicker than butter. I don't have a sawzaw or a plasma cutter at my house so I have to take it to the shop on Monday to get the rest cut off. I only paid $15 for the whole manifold so I couldn't beat the price even for just the SS flange.

From what I researched this turbo should be capable of 350hp. Its a Hy35 turbo which is the smallest of the turbos that came on dodge pickups. I got it for free for giving a guy a ride after his truck broke down at work. It only had about 50k on it and has no leaks or shaft play at all. As soon as Im done with this turbo manifold I will be building a intake manifold as well, to help with my power goals and spool hopefully.

Gotpsi? 11-15-2009 10:48 AM

O and also just for an idea on the physical size of the turbo the inlet is 4" in diameter.

I love the Holsets. Looking forward to seeing how it performs for you.

I will be using this design for the most part from wane cur's build thred https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/att...ni-blend-2.jpg

TurboTim 11-15-2009 09:15 PM

you're welcome for the pic.

Gotpsi? 11-15-2009 09:20 PM

Yes thank you very much, I should have the collector done tomorrow. What program did you make the pic in? The spacing will be a little different because my turbo uses a T3 flange and the compressor housing is huge but it will be the same basic principle.

TurboTim 11-15-2009 09:28 PM

solidworks...that was also for a 1.8 so yeah spacing will be off. Best of luck and lemme know if you need any angles or whatnot.

Gotpsi? 11-15-2009 09:34 PM

Ok cool thanks! The only thing Im in need of and am still working though is runner size and length for the intake manifold I will be building next, I will build it like Brainiack did with the stock flange and injector bores but the rest will be fabed. Im trying to get my father inlaw to machine me up some velocity stacks.

wayne_curr 11-15-2009 09:43 PM

Good choice on tim's design. Definitely what i'll be doing next time around.

ARTech 11-15-2009 09:45 PM

Oh ok. FYI the flange isnt stainless, but for $15 it's still a good deal. Looks like you lucked out too. My manifold didn't fit out of the box. I had to enlarge 4 holes and it came warped so it had to be milled flat.

Your not giving up are you? I liked the way yours was coming, the gaps can be fixed, if you have to make new runners for cyl 2&3 use a hole saw were they are going to conect to cyl 1&2, thats how I get roll cages to fit together before welding them.

Its completed and welded. Sbk has to take it to work to mill the flange that warped when he welded it. I'm trying to convince him to post up pics cause i haven't seen it yet. Said it filled just fine.

Nice! cant wait to see the pics. By the way seeing your build made decide to start on mine so thanks.

JerryMouse4U 11-16-2009 02:58 AM

Can't wait to see the results.

Gotpsi? 11-16-2009 11:46 PM

Small up date I got some things tacked up and plasma cut out a flang that still needs to be cleaned up.

wayne_curr 11-18-2009 12:42 AM

I require an update. Must have pictures or dont bother :)

I want to see your collector assembled with good pictures.
