New bottom mount set up.

So I just started today with the new manifold build. I had the Greddy manifold and turbo before, but I sold it to a friend and decided to build a new set up. I had a ebay manifold I was going to use but decided to go a different direction so I will just be using the flange for the most part. this is the ebay mani.
here it is after the first cuts
these are the collector pieces, I need to take them to work and use the belt sander to get them finished up and get a better fit. the turbo will be centered for the most part on the head so the bends for the collector for cyl 2 and 3 stick out at an angle while the bends for 1 and 4 are parallel to the head, Ill have a better pic once I tack them up next week. I will be very similar to some of the 3D drawings in the other thread.
This is just a pic of the new Holset and the old Greddy turbo.

18psi 11-15-2009 03:29 AM

Holy shit that holset is BIG. What kind of power goals do you have in mind?

greenday3437 11-15-2009 03:29 AM

If that's the manifold I think that it is, I would be worried about it cracking. I know a lot of people have had problems with it before, but hopefully since you are only using a couple of inches of the original then you will be fine.

ARTech 11-15-2009 05:07 AM

You're going to hang that thing off 16/18ga tube? You're a fabricator, why not start with sch10 right off the flange?

IIRC those tubes are 2", while the sch10 pipe is 1.68" ID, that 1/4 inch step down can't be good for flow either

Gotpsi? 11-15-2009 10:44 AM

Like I said that was just my first cut, I didn't know the how thin it was until I cut it, the chop saw went through it quicker than butter. I don't have a sawzaw or a plasma cutter at my house so I have to take it to the shop on Monday to get the rest cut off. I only paid $15 for the whole manifold so I couldn't beat the price even for just the SS flange.

(18 PSI) Holy shit that holset is BIG. What kind of power goals do you have in mind?

From what I researched this turbo should be capable of 350hp. Its a Hy35 turbo which is the smallest of the turbos that came on dodge pickups. I got it for free for giving a guy a ride after his truck broke down at work. It only had about 50k on it and has no leaks or shaft play at all. As soon as Im done with this turbo manifold I will be building a intake manifold as well, to help with my power goals and spool hopefully.

Gotpsi? 11-15-2009 10:48 AM

O and also just for an idea on the physical size of the turbo the inlet is 4" in diameter.

Splitime 11-15-2009 10:51 AM

I love the Holsets. Looking forward to seeing how it performs for you.

Gotpsi? 11-15-2009 05:57 PM

I will be using this design for the most part from wane cur's build thred https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/att...ni-blend-2.jpg

TurboTim 11-15-2009 09:15 PM

you're welcome for the pic.

Gotpsi? 11-15-2009 09:20 PM

Yes thank you very much, I should have the collector done tomorrow. What program did you make the pic in? The spacing will be a little different because my turbo uses a T3 flange and the compressor housing is huge but it will be the same basic principle.

TurboTim 11-15-2009 09:28 PM

solidworks...that was also for a 1.8 so yeah spacing will be off. Best of luck and lemme know if you need any angles or whatnot.

Gotpsi? 11-15-2009 09:34 PM

Ok cool thanks! The only thing Im in need of and am still working though is runner size and length for the intake manifold I will be building next, I will build it like Brainiack did with the stock flange and injector bores but the rest will be fabed. Im trying to get my father inlaw to machine me up some velocity stacks.

wayne_curr 11-15-2009 09:43 PM

Good choice on tim's design. Definitely what i'll be doing next time around.

ARTech 11-15-2009 09:45 PM

Oh ok. FYI the flange isnt stainless, but for $15 it's still a good deal. Looks like you lucked out too. My manifold didn't fit out of the box. I had to enlarge 4 holes and it came warped so it had to be milled flat.

Your not giving up are you? I liked the way yours was coming, the gaps can be fixed, if you have to make new runners for cyl 2&3 use a hole saw were they are going to conect to cyl 1&2, thats how I get roll cages to fit together before welding them.

Its completed and welded. Sbk has to take it to work to mill the flange that warped when he welded it. I'm trying to convince him to post up pics cause i haven't seen it yet. Said it filled just fine.

Gotpsi? 11-15-2009 10:40 PM

Nice! cant wait to see the pics. By the way seeing your build made decide to start on mine so thanks.

JerryMouse4U 11-16-2009 02:58 AM

Can't wait to see the results.

Gotpsi? 11-16-2009 11:46 PM

Small up date I got some things tacked up and plasma cut out a flang that still needs to be cleaned up.

wayne_curr 11-18-2009 12:42 AM

I require an update. Must have pictures or dont bother :)

I want to see your collector assembled with good pictures.

Gotpsi? 11-18-2009 01:07 AM

Haha sorry I didnt get to work on it today, probably by Thursday.

p51hellfire 11-18-2009 01:47 AM

you plan on using that ebay WG?

psiturbo 11-18-2009 07:59 AM

Great job, instant subscribe, the turbo is huge, cant wait to see a dyno sheet when that thing starts spooling, JEJEJE!

Ebay stuff is not after all, I am using EGAY EWG, BOV and CAM GEARS, so far working good! Of course I always read the feedback and other people's follow up comments, time as a seller etc. Anyway, props on your setup will check every now and then to see the progress, thanks for sharing your work with high res images!

Yes I am, I have cx racing BOV and it has worked better than the brand name ones I have used so I figured I would give this a try. If it fails, it uses the same flange as the TiAL 38mm so I can always get a real one.

shlammed 11-18-2009 10:29 AM

woah... stoked to see how this goes!

similar plans to what i have for my 1.6L

for those of use not in the know.... what does your built engine consist of?

Gotpsi? 11-18-2009 01:49 PM

Forged rods, low comp-pistons, bottom end balenced, over sized and unshrouded valves, ported head, Titanium retainers and duel springs, everything squared and blue printed. I bought my engine kit from Belfab. Tri-vally machine did the machining and balancing and I build the motor.

Gotpsi? 11-21-2009 06:36 PM

Ok I know its been awhile but I got a chance to go at to the garage today, here is what I have so far.

Can you take more pics please? Level with front and back and both sides. top and bottom (inside collector). Maybe some 3/4 angle from front/back and both sides as well.

Dont you need those rear angles (for runners 2 and 3) to be more at a 45* angle to match this drawing?
Attachment 202321

Gotpsi? 11-21-2009 08:00 PM

Im not matching the drawing I just used it for a reference. Ill get more pics up I just welded the flange on.

Gotpsi? 11-21-2009 08:06 PM

Hey were are the pics of your manifold already? I thought it was done?

Gotpsi? 11-22-2009 12:50 AM

Ok Im done for the day thought I would share the progress. Not finished yet still need to get my gaps closed up and the runners for 1&4 in and the waste gate on.

Haven't picked it up from Sbk yet. He lives 2 hours from me.

Gotpsi? 11-23-2009 01:28 AM

O bummer cant he at least put some pics up?

viperormiata 11-23-2009 09:11 PM

Are you going to have any problems with your manifold design(Not doubting your skills at all, lol, so please don't think that) and the weight of the Holset? Any plans for serious bracing?

A couple friends of mine have E30's with Holsets ranging from HX30's to HX45's and those suckers are heavy. I remember the HX30 being around 28-30 pounds and the HX45 being around 45-50+ pounds.

I want a holset soooo bad:cry:

Gotpsi? 11-23-2009 09:45 PM

Yes I have bracing in mind, something like the weld bracing on Sav's mani. I will take pics when I am done, I don't have enough material to finish, I just ordered the rest tonight I think I might get it before thanksgiving but we have family coming into town until the weekend so I don't know if I will have time to do any more till next week. I have the HY35 and the turbine housing is about half the size of the housing of the HX35, its still heavy but I know the manifold will hold up.

hustler 11-23-2009 10:53 PM

you're a bottom mount.

Gotpsi? 11-23-2009 11:03 PM

You know I dont roll like that MR broke back mountain. did you run out of nubes to e-thug or somthing?

psiturbo 11-24-2009 07:40 AM

So?

You are driving the car and...?

18psi 11-24-2009 03:17 PM

huh?

psiturbo 11-24-2009 03:19 PM

OMG, How is it running?

You like the combo setup you did?

Is it running good?
\
hu?

Gotpsi? 11-24-2009 08:46 PM

Im not running yet, 18 is. Im waiting for some more stainless, $8 for the part $8 for the shipping, I should have just ordered extra.

Gotpsi? 11-26-2009 09:22 AM

I just found out that the matirials that I need to finish will not be here untill monday . However my volocity stacks for my intake manifold build should be here today!:brain:

shlammed 11-26-2009 10:30 PM

get this fucker boosting.
i want to see your boost logs!

Gotpsi? 11-27-2009 09:57 AM

Dont worry I have taken the next 6 weeks off of work so I will have plenty of time to get it done, Im hoping to make it to a December track event at Sears point.

curly 11-27-2009 01:06 PM

Damn Californians and your December track days, we'd probably need spiked tires for a track day here in the PNW.

Gotpsi? 11-27-2009 10:34 PM

Just found out that its full up so I will have to wait till January. We have track events all year. I think, no Im sure Ive done more events during the winter than in the summer.

triple88a 11-28-2009 01:04 AM

so wheres the external wastegate?

Gotpsi? 11-28-2009 11:10 AM

I guess I could work on that, I have not been back out in the garage since I ran out of strait tube.

cueball1 11-28-2009 04:11 PM

Yeah but if it's like those motorcyles that do spiked tire ice racing that would be cool!

SKMetalworks 11-28-2009 08:59 PM

Would love to see the collector pen shots.

Gotpsi? 11-28-2009 09:18 PM

The collector is not totally done yet, the waste gate will be on the top of it, Ill get some more pics then.

Gotpsi? 12-01-2009 05:45 PM

Well I got some time to work in the garage today! heres what I got so far. sorry for the crappy pics all I have is my phone right now.

18psi 12-01-2009 05:49 PM

Looks damn good man.

One issue I see (and you probably already know this) is its quite a bit far away from the engine. Won't it hit/interfere with the frame of the car? The rail is right there, making all bottom mounts have to be placed REAL close to the engine block to not hit the rail.

Gotpsi? 12-01-2009 05:51 PM

I think I will get the waste gate put on tonight and get some pics up with it on the head in the car w/turbo.

wayne_curr 12-01-2009 07:57 PM

i'm with 18psi, looks like its going to be VERY close to the frame rail if not hitting it.

Gotpsi? 12-01-2009 09:13 PM

Actually it has room on the frame, I hugged it right to the block Ill get some pics up soon, it takes up all the space available between the engine and the frame, getting the spacing right was a pain I have to re make my runners 3 times but it fits well now.

18psi 12-01-2009 09:15 PM

Is there enough room to allow for at least a little engine movement?
