So its gonna be tight but not too tight? :P

Gotpsi? 12-01-2009 09:37 PM

Yea thats why I made it closer to the engine than the frame, plus I have solid motor mounts so movement will be very minimal.

SKMetalworks 12-01-2009 09:40 PM

Collector pen shots??? Also interested in the head flange penetration shots.

Gotpsi? 12-01-2009 10:00 PM

Ill get you the pics when Im done, Im not to happy with some of the welds, I tryed some of this weld through tape the welding store gave me to demo, specificaly for back purging and I didnt like the out come, I had some sugaring in a few places. I also had trubble cleaning some of the parts after plasma cutting them, I found that plasma cuases major sugar and you have to grind the heck out of it before you weld to it or your screwed. But hey this is my first manifold and I dont ever do much with stainless so Im quite happy over all with the project so far.

Gotpsi? 12-01-2009 10:01 PM

penatration was awsome by the way, I just had some sugaring, and I think that take stuff cuased some contamiation that I had to grind out and reweld in a couple spots.

SKMetalworks 12-01-2009 10:04 PM

Meh, only tape i use is 3M masking tape; the white stuff. Smells good and does its job. Had 0 sugaring on waynes manifold. Gonna build myself one hopefully this weekend if the damn flanges get here :vash:

Gotpsi? 12-01-2009 10:07 PM

This stuff was aluminum foil like, It has adhesive on two sides and nothing in the middle, so you are supose to just "weld through" it but it did some strange things so I just diched it.

Gotpsi? 12-01-2009 10:07 PM

It worked great for blocking off the flanges though!

"If it aint broke dont fix it"

Gotpsi? 12-01-2009 10:31 PM

The stuff was free and it was suppose to help so I figured Id try it.

Gotpsi? 12-04-2009 03:38 PM

Ok got some more done last night.

O and by the way my wife is the best! look what she made me while watching Shrek 3! Attachment 202069
now it just needs some nice loom so make it look organized, and I need to make a hold down bracket. FYI its all soldered and heat shrunk, no but connectors.

18psi 12-04-2009 03:44 PM

HAHA that's great:)

What are you going to do about the ewg sitting so high up and hitting the hood?
Also that turbine flange looks like its directly over the rail: looks like it will be a SUPER tight fit for the turbo.
And how are you planning to route the wg tube? Looks like the manifold blocks off its passageway to the dp

Braineack 12-04-2009 03:46 PM

i have a feeling you're going to have boost control issues.

Gotpsi? 12-04-2009 03:50 PM

the waste gate has plenty of clearance thats what the second pic is. Ill get some pics of the turbo on the mani soon, the turbine housing was still hot when I took the pic from welding up the internal waste gate hole. and I have not welded the 90 on the compressor housing yet that it will have. The hardest thing will be the the wastgate routing to the down pipe. it must go behind the manifold by the dip stick.

18psi 12-04-2009 03:55 PM

That's also where the heater core hoses are. Did you remove yours altogether or just for now? If you have your wg tube right next to em they will melt fast

wayne_curr 12-04-2009 03:58 PM

In for 6" wastegate dump out the hood.

Gotpsi? 12-04-2009 03:59 PM

I dont have anything in my car its completely gutted. The only thing it will be close to it the throttle cable. I already melted that so Ill have so Ill have to make a heat shield.

I was actually considering doing it.

18psi 12-04-2009 04:00 PM

Oh, I somehow missed that this is a gutted track car. In that case go nuts and vent straight out the hood:D

wayne_curr 12-04-2009 04:14 PM

A glimpse of your future...

I also just added the map daddy 4 bar map, I hope it works. and I got new front springs 700lb. I will be getting my nascar bars done before the next track day. then the intake manifold build after that track day, I want to see how the car runs with the stock intake mani and this turbo set up before I build one.

Gotpsi? 12-04-2009 04:23 PM

Ok so show any filament questions here ya go, its not bolted down but you can see about where it will sit. this bracket will be trimmed off since I dont need the bracket for the internal waste gate anymore. I know this pic is deceiving but I can reach my hand in between the block and the housing.

18psi 12-04-2009 06:13 PM

You'll definitely need to weld on some bracing on that bad boy.
And these new pictures make it look way different/better. Turbo is definitely not as close to the rail as I thought, so that problem is non existent. Good stuff.

Gotpsi? 12-04-2009 08:56 PM

Bracing is in the works thats why its not done. Ill keep you all posted.

Welding noob here... is this mig or tig?

18psi 12-04-2009 09:39 PM

looks like mig to me

Wrong, Tig (Heliarc, GTAW)

18psi 12-04-2009 09:43 PM

wow. looks a bit messy for a tig. my mistake

Just looks like it got a little hot. Theres probably a thin layer of crud on top of the weld. After he takes a wire brush to the welds, it will look much nicer. Also notice he weaved the collector instead of a stringer bead.

... still interested in them collector pen shots

Like I said earlier about the tape, I think it caused some contamination, all the welds I used that stuff on look crappy, but yes after you brush them of they look fine, defiantly hot. FYI the collector was not weaved, thats the waste gate tube, I obviously messed up, Defiantly a noob with stainless, aluminum is more my thing I think its 10x easier, this is the first thing I have ever made with stainless.

Gotpsi? 12-04-2009 10:10 PM

I will take detailed shots collector and all when its done and everything is cleaned up so im not so embarrassed.:giggle: Im going to the 25 hours at Thunder hill this weekend so I dont think Ill be working on it.

hustler 12-04-2009 10:39 PM

I was going to make fun of that manifold and question your sexual orientation...but I have pitty for what you've done to those turbo parts and can't bring myself to do it.

Good luck.

Gotpsi? 12-04-2009 11:26 PM

Haha, I being no expert in manifold building am very happy with what I have so far, I will run it hard, if it brakes Ill build a better one ( I dont think it will once im done with it), all the while knowing that the turbo, waste gate, tubing and flanges for this whole set up including my flex pipe, exhuast tubing, muffler and down pipe matirials cost me less than $200 even with the welding materials and all of it other than the turbo are brand new. I even made the flanges with some scraps from the metal shop next door and a plasma.

Gotpsi? 01-11-2010 04:44 PM

So its been awhile but I wanted to give yall an up date. Its finished and running, I took it out for a spin and if feels like its going to be a lot of fun, It turned my Hoosier's into smoke in 3rd like they where nothing. Now I just need to tune and fix my tach, I installed cops during the build and need to add a resistor I guess. anyways thanks to everyone (except hustler) for the input and help.

shlammed 01-11-2010 04:55 PM

Sick!

When do you see positive pressure, and when do you see full boost?

In for vids.

wayne_curr 01-11-2010 04:55 PM

Very nice. Good to hear its up and running. Better pics please!

Gotpsi? 01-11-2010 05:34 PM

Sorry about the pics, Ill get better ones, It seems to boost about 500 rpm later or so by sound than my Greddy did. But my tach is not working right now Ill have to do some data loging.

shlammed 01-14-2010 12:41 PM

In for updates!

Gotpsi? 01-14-2010 01:08 PM

I may be data logging this weekend, its hard for me to do since I need to dodge the cops when I take the car out because its not street legal. I live close to an event center and I will be speaking with someone there to see if they would let me use there parking lot for an afternoon.

wayne_curr 01-14-2010 02:32 PM

And still no good pics...

Gotpsi? 01-14-2010 02:48 PM

Here is a better pic

ARTech 01-15-2010 06:36 PM

How'd you end up doing the dump tube?

Gotpsi? 01-15-2010 06:41 PM

It drops down behind the manifold by the dip stick, then goes down and connects right before my flex pipe in the end of the down pipe.

Gotpsi? 01-15-2010 06:43 PM

ARTech I wish your avitar pic was not up in my thread because your stuff looks awsome compared to mine. :giggle:

Reverend Greg 01-15-2010 07:34 PM

Walking the cup is accepted way of welding pipe/tube via TIG,I just dont like the way it looks,But it ties the pieces together better...thats per the AWS specs.
(G)

ARTech 01-17-2010 01:13 AM

It's really not needed for these small pipes though. A straight root & cap, or even a single pass with a good bevel is fine. Walking the cup covers a wider gap, that's the main advatage.

Any pics of the dump tube routing? I'm having a hard time picturing it. It's a pretty tight fit back there. Did you have to curve it under the runner?

Lol, that's only a small section, anyone could do that. Getting the entire mani to look like that is almost impossible. What type of TIG machine are you using?

Gotpsi? 01-17-2010 11:39 AM

I have a Lincoln invertech 205, I did the collector in a single pass but wanted more material there when I put the waste gate on, thats why it looks like that. Ill try to get some pics latter it was very easy, it follows the top of the down pipe all the way down.

SKMetalworks 01-17-2010 11:46 AM

I like using stringers, much easier to know when you have penetration vs weave. I weave thick pipe over 4" just because it looks sweeter and less of a chance of slag inclusions because your burning it in.

Gotpsi? 01-17-2010 11:49 AM

I can see the penetration, I just felt like it was thin in that area because of all the angles and wanted to beef it up so I went over it until The whole area was filled in.

Full_Tilt_Boogie 01-17-2010 11:50 AM

I cant wait to see what kind of power that holset will make
