New FM ceramic manifold and outlet casting
So my new parts came in today. The black looks cool, but seems to be non-uniformly applied. Anyway, I took some pictures of the inside of the manifold and the casting as there are some pretty rough casting marks in there. Should I bother cleaning it out or am I going to mess up the ceramic coating I just paid for?

i dont see how removing casting imperfections from the inside will hurt the coating on the outside...just get a wire brush in there, the one that goes on a grill and go town on it, it should be all you need

Is it black, silver, or duck coated? Sorry, couldn't resist. I'd say hell yea clean up any obvious casting marks.

but I thought the ceramic coating was on the inside and the outside? If not, there are some strange materials in the inside of this.

Some places coat inside, some coat outside, some coat both. The inside helps retain heat and transfer it's energy into the turbine, creating a quicker spool. Outside is all about keeping heat from the engine bay.
I'd just go ahead and clean it up. Sad that they left a rough casting and then coated over it. |

I know two places that refuse to coat the inside because of the risk of some of it flaking and going through the turbo. YMMV

maybe this was my impression from the begi kit. Man, I wish I would have asked FM about this now :( I know the Begi kit is internally and externally coated. According to his book, it keeps more heat in the charge which theoretically spins the turbo faster since you have one more thermal medium for the heat to pass through. I don't know how much of an additional benefit it is, but it sounds cool. Well I guess I am going to have to wait until I get some time to clean this up before I mount it back on the car. I just wish this stuff would come ready to put on. You would think for $800 in parts they could get rid of the casting marks. Oh well, off to buy some attachments for my dremel!

FWIW there are several of casting imperfections in my BEGI manifold. I don't think it makes a difference in the grand scheme of things.

I really like the look of the S4 manifold from Begi. I don't know if it actually does anything but that ram horn look is sweet.

alright, alright :) enough with the duck references... geez. My new manifold doesn't the mating surfaces coated but I think I am going to fix the inside casting marks this weekend.

So they don't coat the inside of their parts, or clean up the casting flash inside either? yuck.
