It's nice to see that even e-thugs have feelings. ~<3

Newbsauce 07-30-2008 08:56 PM

This thread is getting a little too ghey for me. Let me try to balance it out quickly:

Beer
Undercooked Meat Products
Football

There all better. Looking forward to seeing your updates on the car.

Afraid of the gay? Maybe you shouldn't be driving a miata :giggle:

Man, I haven't had a single gay guy hit on me since I installed the turbo... I don't know if it made me less sexy or less obvious. My wife is pleased either way.

It's probably just that they can't catch up to you anymore in their Jeep Wranglers (the number one gay car). :giggle:

There are 170 miles on this turbo install and nothing has gone wrong. 'Home Depot' couplers included.

26.7 mb? damn, you gotta warn a brother about that kinda shit.

we have an awesome feature here called "you tube embedding"...

looks like this: {yt}098afw4aw3{/yt}
where 098afw4aw3 is the last part of the youtube URL after the = sign.

oh and use [ instead of {...

it's so awesome.

I missed the dump tube part. sorry. I am still curious why you modified the original housing though.

Actually, now that I'm writing this post I see the button (oops)! I was having trouble with this earlier which is (partially) why I chose the Tourettes Guy. I can't really tell if you're being sarcastic or not... if you are, then "thanks a lot". If you aren't, then thanks!

Here ya go!

S'all good.

Found a pic of what it looked like originally.
You can see the wimpy little passage that the wastegate'd exhaust connected to the downpipe through. Having this exhaust create pressure just behind the turbine is no good for top end power.

Here are some pics from an HMT meet a while back.
http://homepage.mac.com/gavinwilliams/HMT/HMT.html

At the previous meet we turbo'd my friend Jeremy's 2000 civic. At this one we installed the tubular manifold.
He ran that external wastegate open for nearly the entire time he had the car (bout two years of near daily driving on it).

Do you guys have the balls to turbo a car in an afternoon, 100+ miles from home?
I sure don't, these days :)

I wanted to open his hood, but didnt want to have to deal with shit if someone from another team saw me doing it.

Stage II Clutch

Finished installing this Spec Stage II clutch the day before my most recent autocross

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3207/...b13dc200_o.jpg

My girlfriend broke it in for me ;)

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3294/...a9390f4d_o.jpg

Unfortunately I was asked to leave the autocross after four runs because I had an open exhaust (which many other people managed to get away with...)

I did replace those "Home Depot" couplers (although nothing went wrong with them at all for 400+ miles) with real ones. And yes, I drove to the autocross (45 minutes each way) with that wastegate dumping into the engine bay. And I encountered zero problems!

UrbanSoot 08-30-2008 02:53 AM

waiting on "i melted something under my hood because im a dumbass and i vent exhaust gases under my hood" thread.

cueball1 08-30-2008 12:47 PM

Welcome to the board. Good job sticking with it. You got knocked around some and came through OK.

Nice Ghetto build. You've done a lot and have a lot left to do or improve on. Go back through all the BS, there is actually plenty of good advice there. The reason so many here point out your failures and potential points of failure is they have lived through them themselves. There is some good advice there coming from experienced builders, it's just disquised as bashing.

Keep at it and keep improving it. Wastegate vta and LC1 would be priorities for me. Intake position and improving the quality of the piping/ connectors would be 2nd.

cardriverx 08-30-2008 03:35 PM

DUDEEEE...

We have the same turbo. Except mine has a BOV molded into the compressor houseing.

Welding the wastegate-exhaust passage and running a dump pipe is a really good idea. I just might have to do that this summer!!

Thanks for the idea!

Oh hey, when do you get full spool?

kotomile 08-30-2008 04:43 PM

Nice to see that people have chilled out on the guy, finally.

UrbanSoot 08-30-2008 05:14 PM

by the way, looking at your pressure plate i can say with 100% confidence that it is exedy oem replacement pressure plate. you need something beefier if you ever want to go over 200whp.

Braineack 08-30-2008 07:07 PM

no that's a real SPEC PP.

If only everyone could express their advice in a coherent and civilized manner like that, this thread would get somewhere! We're definitely welding together something for my wastegate this week, and I need to program the LC1 soon so I can output to my analogue A/F gauge. Anyone have experience with that? I couldn't figure out how to get it to output properly to the MegaSquirt.

Besides the couplers that I already replaced, what else do you think needs to be changed with regards to my piping?

Good for you, mine works perfectly and doesn't slip at all (unless I really try to make it, which I don't). And my pressure plate is a real Spec pressure plate as Braineack pointed out.

cardriverx - I'm going to drive it around in a few minutes and find out some (nearly) exact numbers for you. It gets up to full boost much faster than you (and I) would expect! Your turbo sounds very interesting, I'd like to see a picture of your compressor housing if you have one.

Best pic I have is this ( you can see the vac line going from the TB to the BOV.) Its pretty nice actually, works great, sounds good, a nice pshhh.

Attachment 211353

I seem to get 14 psi by 4000 rpm ish.

Man the more I think about making the waste gate dump separate the more I wanna do it.

Nope... my SpecStgII has been flawless since I torqued the PP bolts evenly to the flywheel. I'm currently running 15psi via EBC and it clamps like a champ. I'm gonna say in the 220whp neighborhood. I know what 200whp feels like in the car and it's considerably faster now.

Spec uses the Exedy PP's and then modify's them for their application.

I'll be dragging it at the end of the month and will report back. But a full day of autocross school... probably 30runs with about 8 back-to-back at the end of the day with ZERO issues.

UrbanSoot 08-30-2008 11:47 PM

i heard pretty bad things about those clutches on numerous occasions and thats where im basing my judgment from :)

urgaynknowit 08-31-2008 10:32 AM

i melted a whole buncha shit under my first miatas hood and my downpipe and everything was welded shut. so if i did it with a complete downpipe, ur going to do it without one...

good luck to you,

anyone who can build a turbo kit for a car, get it running, and not blow the fucker up, is legit, untill that is,, he blows it up

Cowpoke 09-16-2008 08:16 PM

cardriverx - Sorry it took so long to do this, my RL brake caliper sprung a (thankfully well-timed) leak from the parking brake assembly (this spot) for the second time.

Anyway, on the highway in 5th I made 11psi at around 3,200 RPM. It builds boost really quickly after shifts when driving spiritedly.

I'm now running a 3" downpipe + cat to a 2 1/4 Borla muffler. It's nearly silent at idle (which is pleasant). The wastegate now dumps a few feet down from my turbo under the car and sounds excellent (I'll post pictures/video when I get a chance).

Still not a single problem and approaching 1k miles.

Cowpoke 09-24-2008 05:00 PM

Here's some pictures of my new exhaust:

cardriverx 09-25-2008 01:01 PM

very nicee. You get slightly quicker spool than me, but I have a smaller exhaust. I seriously have to copy your wastegate idea..

Braineack 09-25-2008 01:02 PM

now that's more like it :)

Fireindc 10-22-2008 01:09 AM

More boost, then more videos!

FWIW, I ran Home Depot couplers on my first Miata for over 30k miles including a 5k mile road trip with no issues.

NOOOO bullshit.. I saw that coming. Seriously, when I saw the open WG port and the unmolested dipstick handle.. I knew it was facing certain death!! :bowrofl:

Btw, I LOVE the color of your car. Very nice!

SPEC Stage III FTMFW.

Have over 10k on that clutch. Broke it in properly, and it'll handle a 7200rpm dump on R-Comps. I've autocrossed the shit out of that car, with that clutch, dumping the shit out of it every start. ;)

Put 60,000 miles on a Spec Stage III in my 1997 WS6 T/A. Easily had over 200 5000rpm dumps on ET Drags without failure. The 10 bolt rear end on the other hand...

Gavin 10-26-2008 03:17 PM

New video!

http://homepage.mac.com/gavinwilliams/Devens.jpg
And more where that came from.

The cars a huge handful, but extremely rewarding :-P
Its biggest problem is that its riding on my 2 season old BFG Geforce KDWs. Otherwise, John's Tein springs are really not aggressive at all (as you can see form the body roll, how much it squats, and the way I'm pinning the nose with the brake)... and I think replacing those with something stiffer and/or sway bars are in order.
Or really, its great the way it is! Just needs the alignment dialed in I'd say.

elesjuan 10-26-2008 06:57 PM

Dude, DAMN!!!!!

That car looks like a handfull! :D

I want an auto-x course that long!! I can't use thrid gear on any of ours hardly ever. :(

Cowpoke 10-27-2008 08:11 PM

I put it on YouTube for you n00bz

Also, in case anyone is wondering, that is Devens Air Force Base in Ayer, MA.

A little delayed, but here you go!

Running nice and strong with 20k on this build. Only failure so far is my stock 1.6 differential.
