Fucking hell! I put on a newer T28 and it's still spewing oil out the compressor outlet!! I know this turbo was not leaking before as I saw it running. What the hell am I doing wrong? I am using a 1/8" rivet restrictor and my oil drain looks pretty sloped. Can someone help me figure out what is going on here? How small of a restrictor should I be looking at? I read on the Garrett site that these BB turbos have built in restrictors?

I am just idling and reving the car on my driveway with the charge pipes disconnected and controlling the WG with my hand. So I'm left with too high oil pressure and/or poor oil drain? I have the car jacked up with the driver side in the air, even if my oil drain was bad this should help it, right?

I knew it wasn't going to be as simple as swapping turbos. I just want to drive without leaving a smoke screen :sad2:

What are your AFRs when this happens. I had an issue with smoking during warm up before I got my WB o2. After installation, I realized my warm up was super lean. Richened it up, no more smoke. I'm assuming there wasn't enough fuel to burn and it was consuming some oil as well. Might not have anything to do with it at all. Just a random thought.

I also had to deal with the above mentioned issues before as well. Any one of which could cause the smoking. It's hard to say which one it could be but oil in the compressor housing is suspicious.

It is oil coming out of the compressor outlet. I've got the charge pipes disconnected right now, so it's not burning any oil. Anyone?

Just out of curiosity, could you post a pic of your engine bay/setup.

dgmorr 06-17-2010 10:50 PM

Yeah, I'll go snap a pic.

I'm going to order a 0.035" restrictor I've been reading about.

Here's a crappy old pic of when I was installing my T25 originally. Basically the same thing now, but a T28. I just used a smaller rivet about 1/16" and it's still shooting oil out the compressor outlet.

Is there any play in the shaft?

dgmorr 06-18-2010 07:54 AM

No meaningful play in the shaft of either turbo.

OK, this is going to sound dumb, and people are going to argue that it doesn't happen (again), BUT....
After putting in my new motor I overfilled the engine by 1qt. It was enough to cover the oil return from the turbo, and for some stupid reason that caused oil to backup into the turbo even with the restrictor in place. It was pretty bad though. If you took the hose off the compressor outlet it would make a 'vzzzzzz!' sound and mist oil all over everything. I thought for sure that I'd killed the compressor seal in the turbo, but after draining out the extra oil and dumping a suprising amount out of the intercooler, everything was normal again.
