oil cooler and oil-filter relocation - how do i do the lines?
I have a moss oil filter relocation kit and i just got in my 1.6 flyin miata oil cooler kit, the problem im having is figuring out how do i run both of these kits together?
Call me dumb but i can seem to figure out how the oil lines would work out? I plan on using -8AN size hose for everything, im not worried out pressure loss while using size -8an hose since my oil pressure is always pinned at 90psi while cruising and 70psi during normal driving thanks to my BE oil pump, Anyways back to the question. Is it even possible to run both kits at the same time? Thanks |
I think you're going to need a -8an male/male connector. The feed line will go from the block to the oil cooler (or filter, depending on what you want to do). At this point, the return line from either usually goes back to the stock filter location on the block. Now however, you're going to need to go twice as far, either from the oil cooler to the firewall, or vise verse. This is where you'll need to put the -8 union. A better idea would be to scrap two of the lines and buy one complete one that's the correct length, which will allow you to route it how you like, and get rid of two potential failure points.

i don't plan on using the oil lines that come with the moss kit. i have stainless lines with my own fittings ready.

Yes, however more knowledgeable people will hopefully be able to tell you whether it's a better idea to do that, or go to the filter first. Maybe email FM? I'm sure they've done it before. Also, who's plate are you using at the block, presumably you have 2.

yeah i just realized i still have the plate from the moss kit and then theres the sandwhich plate with the thermostat in it. that means i have a total of 4 ports sticking out from the block..
so there would be the sandwich plate THEN ontop of that would be the moss plate..what do i do about that? |
Oh right, you'd have to use the moss plate, and only the moss plate. You don't need the sandwich plate that came with the FM kit.

LOL what do you mean!? that was the whole point of getting the oil sandwich plate from FM since it has a thermostat inside it.

you have two things: one is a sandwich plate that goes between the filter and block. Another is a cover, which replaces the filter. You don't need the sandwich plate, since the cover plate for the moss kit has an outlet and inlet for the lines. Look at your diagram, you only need 2 ports at the block. Using both plates would give you 4.
If you want, you can over complicate the system by putting the sandwich plate between the moss cover and block, and having four lines. One out to the filter and another back, and then one from the sandwich plate out to the oil cooler and back. |

Engine out-filter in Filter out-cooler in Cooler out- engine in It doesn't make a huge difference, but I ran the filter before the cooler because hot oil can pass through the filter easier. I also made a cap on the cooler so I could siphon it dry and put new oil in. |

If you need a oil thermostat, run it like I showed in my awesome ms paint picture.
If you want a simpler, less leak prone system, set it up the way you drew in your awesome ms paint picture. Mine has 10 possible leak points if you include the sandwich plate surfaces, and a thermostat. Yours only has 6 possible leak points but no thermostat. You're saying the sandwich plate has the thermostat, right? Why is this so complicated, I'm merely giving you two options. |
OKAY, so your saying. Use the mocal thermo plate AND the moss plate. and run it as you say in your drawing?

The only way to use the thermostat is to hook up both adapters. Sandwich plate goes on the block, adapter goes on top of that, both go in exactly the same way as if the other one didn't exist.
If you want to cut down the amount of stuff hanging off the oil filter mount, you can get an inline thermostat from Mocal. It's got 4 AN ports on it, and you'd mount it in one of the lines going either to or from the remote filter (with the switched lines going to the cooler). That's expensive though, and there's no good place to mount it. --Ian |
