Oil Drain
 

Hey guys, I did some searching on oil drains back into the pan, I have a -6 weld-in bung that I was hoping to use, but it seems that everyone has -10. Would a -6 be okay to use? I have the pan off and want to get this thing welded in. Also, just off the top of my head, is the oil port on the side of the block for feeding the turbo m10x1.5? I just want to double check, I know I have looked before but cant remember.

-10AN = .625" I.D.
-6AN = .375" ID = pretty small for drain

dang I didnt realize that was such a big gap in I.D. sizes, would a -8 be a compromise or just buy a -10 and be done with it?

8 is fine.

well, so much for it looking like a roll of quarters, it more or less looks like a ball of shit. I guess I should have laid down some practice beads before giving it a go. I dont TIG very often, and it shows. But function over form on this one I guess. What do you guys think?

Sorry man but that looks super haggard, but welding onto the pan is one of the hardest things you can do. Oil residue just pulls through the metal.

yeah it looks like hell, I thought about trying to clean it up with a grinder but I'm not sure. Buy another pan and try again lol

Bah, just go with it, you're not going to put the bottom of your motor on show. I had a -10 welded on my pan - what size did you end up going with?

Tip on welding oily aluminum... put lacquer thinner on a rag and rub it clean. Then use a grinder with a sanding pad to take out all the porousness to make it a dull shine, clean again with lacquer thinner then stainless steel brush. Some imperfections still will get by you so use 4043 rod and set the machine highest clean without ruining your ball and run it hot. You can also preheat with a propane torch which i do most of the time welding anything except thin tubing (just to about 200*).

I was going to go with a -8 but the local speed shop only had -10 so thats what I went with. I didnt want to wait for Summit to ship one out. Thank you for the tips, I skipped some steps. I just used a SS brush and some brake kleener. I thought about preheating but wasnt sure if it would help any. I defiantly need more practice. Hell setting this thing up can confuse me. Its old, I will snap a picture tomorrow.
