is it possible to tap the pan without uasge of air?
I've read the manuals from FM, AVO and Bell. They all say to use airpressure to blow out the alu pieces when drilling the pan.
I don't have airpressure at home so: I thought to drain about the half of the oil out of the pan, then drill (with a lot of vaseline) and tap (again with a lot o vaseline), mount the oil return line only at the side of the oilpan. Now drain the resuming oil out of the pan. Flush the pan by using the oil return line (and old oil) a few times. After that I hope there isn't any shit in the pan anymore. How do you all tap the pan, when there is no airpressure around? |
yes, drill and tap with lots of grease. Flush with mineral spirits.

Got a hairdryer?? Cover the output with a sock or stocking and put it into the oil filler opening.

i didnt use air.
if you go slowly, it's possible to get a finger in there to get any stray chips out. it's also possible to cut the @#$% out of your finger doing it, but blood wont hurt your motor. |
Bent Q-Tips works great and got a lot of shavings out for me. Then I flushed with mineral spirits.
edit. I did not use any air either. |
^^^TRIPLE THAT! Regular Q-tips bent 90* will fish around under the drill site and get 90% of the shavings... flush with mineral spririts for another 5%... forget about the last 5%.

If you consider the fact that the bits have to get through two filters before getting into the engine you will soon realize you dont have to go overboard to get all the bits.

I didn't use any air and I got all of the shavings out... but I don't recommend doing it my way. :D

BEGi has not suggested the use of air pressure. Thirty years of tapping aluminum oil pans with the procedure we have outlined has proven 100% safe.
It is a 15 minute job to do perfectly. C'mon man, have a little faith. |
No air for me either. I just greased the tap real good and it pulled most of the chips out with it. Used the Q-Tips as stated before. I pulled my pan off to fix a leaky gasket and was quite surprised to find out there wasn't any chips in the pan. It's a fairly sound procedure.

Thanks for all your replyes!
Now I'm confident that it can be done without air. Special thanks and sorry for my mistake about Bell (: |
