Replacing my China T04e hunk of shit
2 Attachment(s)
My current specs:
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1407985486 stock 1.6L 627cc EV14 GT500 injectors Toyota COPs Megasquirt II homemade log with external wastegate ebay intercooler & bov 2.5" downpipe with 3" exhaust (homemade) China T04e .63 a.r. with these specs: Compressor Wheel 0.50 A/R Cold Side Ind: 52.76 mm Exd: 75.46 mm Trim: 48.9 Turbine Wheel 0.58 Ind: 57.75 mm Exd: 73.35 mm Trim: 61.9 I am running this setup on 15psi and I'm getting full boost at around 4300rpm. Fun on the highway, but not ideal. Turbo is oversized. I had good luck with the longevity of the ebay turbo, so I figured I'd give another a try. I'd like to keep my T3 manifold. I would like a turbo that is fully spooled at around 3500rpm while keeping the same type of top end power I am getting the T04e now(no idea what power I'm making now). I would like the turbo to be capable of 300rwhp (ish) and not suffer power drop off like 2554 and the like do. I was reading about Brain's T3 endeavors (.48 a.r. hot side, .42 a.r. cold side) and I like the power he made (240ish rwhp @ 15psi?), but would I experience the top end drop off? What about if I went with a .50 or even .60 a.r. cold side? |
Unrelated, but why do you have your valve cover breather connected to the charge pipe? It might just be the picture but you should disconnect that immediately.

I think the turbo brain used is definitely a decent one for what it is, though I'm thinking it might have to be run full tilt to hit 300.
I don't think you're gonna find the "best of both worlds" here though. The only turbo's that will spool really good and make really good power all cost a pretty penny, not chinachargers. |

Full tilt, like 25psi? I understand that it's a big expectation for a China charger to spool quick and make good power. Any idea what my current setup should be making? I would just hate to switch and have the car feel slower

There's definitely a t3 EWG option for the 2860 at least. I'm interested in what you find though, cause I am thinking along the same lines for my car. I have pistons/rods but don't want EFR crazy 400whp, but would like a bit more than the brain 50-trim. |
potato won't spool at 3500 on a 1.6, and definitely not with the t3 hotside IMO

go do a virtual dyno log and post it up. no need to guess

Buy the $200 50 trim chinacharger T3 I was using and win at life.
I think Gospeed is the vendor that sells it now. It'll spool like a T25 and can support up to about 300rwhp with enough boost. It'll make enough low-end torque that you can actually blow your shitty 1.6L rods and will be able to swap out in like 15 minutes. |
Yeah but with the same a/r a genuine BB turbo will spool better than a journal bearing churbo. How much better I'm not sure, I doubt there are many people who run a T3 EWG potato on a Miata.
I like Braineak's idea though. Get the T3 50 trim and see how much boost it will take before it asplodes so I know how much to run later ;) |
Yes, you just plug in a log from MS, but it had to have been on a straight/flat/level road, in I think 3rd or 4th gear. Search "virtual dyno", we have a whole thread about it here. Its free.
The bottom line is I don't think you will find what you're looking for. You will either have to compromise spool or power. But if anything, get the turbo that brain had cause it seemed to actually spool decent. |

that looks like the EWG version of it, yes.
had a 42mm/60mm compressor wheel. Since you don't need the wasgate actuator and v-band wastegate, that looks like a better deal for you. You might just need a different coupler off the turbo to your IC pipes since it flares up to like 2.25" IIRC, but other than that, you should be able to swap it fast. I was able to bolt mine in, on my BEGi manifold, on a lunch break. Just be careful, that looks like a 4-bolt outlet, not the standard 5-bolt T3 outlet your DP is probably built for. you'd probably have to drill/tap two holes on it. |
I noticed the dp, I wonder if I could drill a hole in the flange of the dp where the 4 hole is. It seems most of these use 4 bolt do, but I'll look again
|
that would be easier if you have the room on your flange.
|
Similar specs, 5-bolt exhaust (not sure if it's the standard T3 though). Much cheaper.
