somethings wrong..?

i just finished my turbo build on my 1990 miata with the 1.6.
it was running good i took it got gas filled it up all the way with premium went to my moms house and turned it off. an hour later it wouldnt stay running. i would start the car and a second later it would die. i tried giving it gas and it did the same thing started then died immediatly. rpms go to 2k then it dies. so i figured it might be a fuel filter so i switched that out with no help. i also thought maybe a vacuum line got loose so i checked every clamp on every hose and they all seemed good.
so what would cause my car to start no problem every time but die a split second later. i was running 5psi for that day only drove the car about 10 miles after the build till this happened.

collin4170 12-26-2010 02:55 PM

plugs and wires are also new.

Savington 12-26-2010 03:05 PM

-What are you using to add fuel?
-What are you using to retard timing?
-What are you using to monitor AFRs?

collin4170 12-26-2010 03:11 PM

nothing nothing nothing.... lol
i adjusted the idle thats it for now.

collin4170 12-26-2010 03:13 PM

just so u know my goals well i just has to run. ha
i bought my 1990 miata for $500
and just bought a bunch of ebay turbo crap for another $500
just has to run so i can resell the next owner can choose what they would like to do..

collin4170 12-26-2010 03:21 PM

i think the vacuum leak might be the valve cover breather has a filter on running to the atmosphere and not to the intake so maybe ill switch that and see what happens..

fooger03 12-26-2010 03:43 PM

airflow meter

collin4170 12-26-2010 05:39 PM

what about the airflow meter?

levnubhin 12-26-2010 06:39 PM

Thanks, I won a bet with myself. What's with the rash of noobs with 5psi no fuel setups these days?

Looks like I need to stock up on salvage motors.

olderguy 12-26-2010 07:01 PM

Sounds like a broken connection to the AFM dropping out the fuel pump relay. You can verify this by jumping F/P to ground in the diagnostic box.

They obviously think they know more than everyone else on the board. It's also obvious that he hasn't done any searching or research.

This project sounds fun. I wanna do one too!!

But in all seriousness, who is collecting the money for when this motor pops (after he gets it running again)?

the reason its not running right is cause you're not running enough boost.
turn it up to 20psi. should run like butter

Seriously, though, call me for the replacement motor when you pop this one.

yeah people love to buy cars with pistons that are blown apart into smitherenes. I know that given the typicall test drive i or anyone else does you would have a lump of metal by the end of the inspection. Part of getting the shit running is getting it to run, boost makes heat, heat makes detonation happen. Detonation kills your motor.

Faeflora 12-28-2010 09:53 AM

I wouldn't buy a miata if it was boosting less than 20psi. I recommend you turn it up at least to 20psi for the buyer test drive.

No no it won't be him that'll call you, it'll be the poor owner that he's hawking this thing off to.

levnubhin 12-28-2010 11:29 AM

So what "fixed" it?

My best guess is luck. Pretty sure luck is also whats keeping this motor from blowing up.

TheMcCoy14 12-29-2010 11:51 PM

Probably found the coupler that popped off...
