Default SR20 T25 rebuild?

Hey guys,

Unfortunately I've singled out my oil smoke to be the turbo. Is it cheap to rebuild the SR20 T25, or should I just get a newer one? I have a BB T28 available locally for $280. Where can I get a T25 rebuild kit? If I take the turbo apart, will I need to get it balanced after reassembly?

Is ebay a reliable source for these parts?

I'm new to the T2 scene, but here's my take from a lot of recent research.

1. It's very easy to rebuild a T25, and cheap to boot. The SR20 is a perfect turbo for our motors, and rugged. Plenty of rebuilt ones out there performing just as well as original Garrett assemblies.

2. $280 is pretty cheap for a BB T28, real cheap in fact depending on mileage and model. I'm assuming it's an S15 turbo, and probably has some miles on it. Could be a decent upgrade, although most of those offer only marginal headroom over the SR20, but still more than the stock rods can handle. If you don't buy that one though, send me the details.

3. Yes, lots of folks buying the ebay kits. See Sam's writeup for directions. He makes it look easy, I've yet to try though.

EDIT: Disregard all of the above. Your turbo is now worthless, and it's illegal to dispose of them in Kanuckisland. Mail it to me, with a $20 disposal fee, and I'll take care of it here, where the laws are a little more lax.

^ lol, yeah.

I believe the seller said it was an S14 T28. I'm not really looking to upgrade since I haven't even finished tuning mine, but if the T28 is the same price as a T25, I'd take it.

Does this white stuff indicate a water leak? I just checked again and there is very minimal shaft play. 2mm side to side I imagine. Am I just in denial?

White stuff does look like mineral deposits.

Can't you have minimal shaft play and still blow the rear oil seal..causing smoking? 2mm sounds like a good bit though.

It's blue smoke, so it's going through the engine, and not straight into the exhaust (I've had the latter before, it was horrible). Right now it's smoking only under deceleration, but my compression checked out fine.

I'm gonna try and rebuild with an ebay kit soon I suppose, and no, I didn't search. I may just get that T28 and rebuild this one for a spare.

This is similar to the amount of play I have on the compressor side.

Thanks, I came across those. Funny, Dimitry is the guy I bought a rebuilt TD04 off of when my Saab turbo went. I didn't see that he had a T25 rebuild DIY.
