SS Manifold

Hey, I was looking around and couldn't find and answer.
Can anyone tell me what Inner Diameter SS pipes should I use for my exhaust manifold, and how thick the walls are supposed to be.

THanks

My stainless tubular manifold is at least 16ga- maybe 14. I'm guessing the primaries are 1-1/2". I can measure them tomorrow if somebody doesn't come up with an answer.

you want to make it out of 1.5" sch 40 SS weld els. Use sch 10 at a minimum for longevity.

+1 for schedule 40 1.5" weldels

Great site Chad. But i need a place that sells ss321 :)
LMK if you have something.

Thanks everyone else as well.

You don't need 321 you need 304 if you want to do it that way. Sch 40 would be stronger than that tubing though.

neogenesis2004 06-19-2007 12:43 AM

thats for that link, I just bought all my exhaust and dp stuff incl vbands (minus muffler) for under $250

cjernigan 06-19-2007 12:51 AM

What did you pick up from them?

cjernigan 06-19-2007 12:53 AM

Forgot to add that if you call in your order and say you are a homemadeturbo.com forum memeber you get like a 5% discount there. And you can get them to do cheaper shipping (usps) if you call.

neogenesis2004 06-19-2007 01:02 AM

luckily paypal is down right now, so my order didnt go through. I'm picking up the 3" aluminized kit, carsound 3" cat, and some mild steel vband assemblies.

cjernigan 06-19-2007 01:11 AM

hell yeah nig nog that the tight shit right thurr.
Glad I could help with a little info, are you gonna tig or mig your exhaust?
Make sure you clamp the v-bands together tight as shit when you weld them to the pipes to keep them from warping.

neogenesis2004 06-19-2007 01:20 AM

tig

cjernigan 06-19-2007 01:34 AM

Oh yeah, forgot about the big money motor build with tig welder included.

I want 321ss because it handles heat alot better, it doesn't crack as easily as 304. The place I work at is making me a ss manifold flange for the price of the steel :) I'll have the possibility to make more if anyone wants but IDK about the price. I'll be making the intake manifold myself as well

neogenesis2004 06-23-2007 12:06 AM

I was under the assumption that 316 is the best SS you can get for high heat applications. You can also still get it in sch40 weld els which is what you NEED to make the runners out of. They will hold the weight of just about anything you bolt on indefinitely. Full Race makes their manifolds using them and they hold GT42R and bigger turbos all the time no problems.

Dhaark 06-23-2007 12:37 AM

so neo, you recommend the 316 instead? I'll check the prices on monday and compare the price of 304 to 316 and 321. They told me that the price difference is not really big in wholesale. IDK, we'll see

BTW, does anyone have a CAD file (*.dxf) of an intake manifold flange?

Thanks.

neogenesis2004 06-23-2007 12:44 AM

I checked further, looks like 321 is the best. Like you mentioned though, I dunno how cost goes at wholesale. At ebay store prices the 316 avg about $2 more per weld el over 304. I couldn't find 316 in the diameter I wanted though so I just went with 304. At sch40 thickness though I don't think it will matter what you order. That is 0.145" thick if memory serves me correctly. 2 1/2 times thicker than standard 16gauge (0.065"), so like I said it will hold anything for longer than you will own the car.

Markp 06-23-2007 10:01 AM

You only need 321 in salt water environments. 304 is fine for most stuff, especially when you are getting sch 40.

Dhaark 06-23-2007 03:19 PM

I'll be checking the priceing on them on monday.
I'll be most likely going with 321 because it handles heat cycles better then the other ones.

DOES ANYONE HAVE A CAD FILE OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD FLANGE?

cjernigan 06-23-2007 03:28 PM

I think turbotim does.
You're disassembling your motor anyway, you could just draw your own.
