Stupid F***in n00b DIY questions
Hey all!
I figured I would ask some stupid questions today! Really just looking for a pointer to a useful DIY build link. I read the sticky above, lots of great stuff there, but my question is a bit more basic. Is there a general checklist of stuff to collect for a turbo miata project? I am planning to start collecting parts to convert my newly acquired JR M45 to a turbo car. I am not a total n00b, I have installed and owned a 1.6 BEGI S3, tuned with a Link. The intimidating part is to have to source all the little "bits" versus buying a turnkey setup. Here is what I have thus far... 1999 NB MS2 e from Reverent coming (may upgrade to a MS3) TDR front intercooler ID 725cc Injectors Mishimoto Radiator New Clutch OK exhaust system (not stock, but not up to full turbo snuff) MTX-l Here is what I know I need: Turbo (either 2560 or 2860 likely) Manifold (BEGI, FM, or Artech- really digging the Artech) Downpipe (from same place as above likely) Sandwich Filter for oil feed T fitting for water feed Do I need a wastegate? I am sure there are various bits and pieces I am missing here, but anything obvious I should be sourcing? |
You only need a wastegate if your turbo doesn't have one internally. Most 2560's are internally wastegated, unless you swap the exhaust housing I believe. Not sure about the 2860.
|
The build threads section is what you are looking for.
You probably don't need a wastegate, as it's easy to get those garret turbos internally gated. In fact with most if you wanted to run an external wastegate you would have to weld the internal shut. |
You claim to have done this before, so I'm not sure how detailed a response you want....
Go check out the FM or BEGi website and dig up the instructions for the FM2 or BEGi S series turbo kits. They should include a list of parts. |
Yes, I did do it before, but it was back in 2006 or 7 and everything was in a box with directions! Good advice on pulling out my old installation instructions for the BEGI- heck, I might just call Corky up and get all the bits I need- like a lite version of the starter kit. Something about those Artech manifolds though....

Its cool, we deal with a lot of different types around here so I never know how my comments will be perceived.
FM offers a cast manifold, cast downpipe elbow and downpipe for $750. See HERE http://www.flyinmiata.com/Store/images/22-20000.jpg Abe can do you a very simple manifold and downpipe like what Curly is running for about the same $$$ +/- $100 IIRC. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1332400059 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1332400059 Read about it here: https://www.miataturbo.net/build-thr...e6/#post851963 That's pretty god damn good for the money. Not only does Abe's gear represent a significant level of craftsmanship, about the only way to beat it is to DIY. No clue what BEGi charges for the same. After that, its plumbing and planning. Fittings will drive you insane for DIY. Not so much figuring out what to use, but actually finding them. This will be driven partially by your sources for said fluids. Again, check build threads for routing. Intercooler plumbing shouldn't be bad. Is yours an "over the top" TDR? There are enough build threads around here that it shouldn't be much of an issue if its not. Mobius has a bitchen thread with a lot of this information, bonus points that its specific to an NB. I'm using that entire parts list for the hot side of intercooler setup, but I had issues getting the cold side single piece pipe from FM to fit, so I went "traditional" with mine. I just ordered one of these from Amazon: I found it listed in this thread: https://www.miataturbo.net/build-threads-57/sjps-paint-numbers-build-70470/ Its not here yet, so if it doesn't fit, I'm blaming SJP0tato :giggle: Just a note: your 1999 is mechanically the same as my 2000 and I don't even have a turbo. I found all this info by reading and searching here on the forum. You better make a build thread with lots of pics once you get your stuff figured out, I want to see what does/does not work out for you ;) |

Thanks for the the link to Curly's build, that totally helps and I have subscribed. Yes, it is the over the top, and Gary actually sells a kit to use that with a FM turbo, you just need to re-clock the turbo, so it should be very easy to adapt to a custom. One great advantage of living in Reno- I may well have the world's greatest speed shop down the street. The Summit Racing retail location is so cool... need a WB02, just go take your pick. Want a racing seat- right here. Fittings- yes we have whatever you want.... I just got the car last Friday, and I have not lifted a wrench (yet!). I will try to do a build thread- not my specialty!!! |
Last time I talked to abe it was more than just + or - 100. I don't know how he feels about people quoting his prices but i'd talk to him directly for pricing.

Why not just a piece of wire or a strong spring.

FYI. Worked a deal with 18psi for his S4 with a 2860. Anyone know anyone looking for a JR supercharger?
|
Most of us try not to associate with idiots haha.

Chillax, that's not from a quote. As stated previously, this is all from information I've gathered by searching around the site. I put the +/- in there because based on what I've read, there seems to be a range, and I'm sure it's based on configuration, options, etc. If homeslice wants a real quote, he can call or email Abe and get one just like the rest of us plebes.
OP glad you were able to come to an agreement and come closer to getting your turbo on. |

For the water cooling you dont need a t pipe. You just have to unplug the hose from the mixing casting and plug that into the drain side to the turbo and plug the fill side to the mixing casting.
See the line going from the mixing casting to the turbo. Thats your fill line, Use a 2 sided barb fitting to connect the coolant drain line to the hose you took off from the mixing casting. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1360515701 |
