Swapped turbo, fittment issues
 

Like the title says, I swapped my turbo out for another. The old turbo was a t3 60/.63 stage 3 turbine (don't ask why) The new one is t3 60/.48 stage 1. Now my problem is that it seems like the studs are shifted just slightly counter-clockwise as seen in the picture. This causes the wastegate to not line up correctly, and also the downpipe hits the transmission tunnel, making it impossible to slide the flange all the way on. i know that I can fix this by hacking, rotating, and rewelding the downpipe and that is what I am going to do, but has anybody had this problem before?

I'm swapping mine out for an ebay T3. Going to try a 50 trim over my Super 60....I sure hope I dont have the same issue!!!


hold the other turbine up to it and snap a pic, I'm curious myself.

alright, im in the middle of modifying the downpipe right now ... probably take me another hour or so. Once I am done Ill take side by side shots of the turbos

visually they seem the same. Though the picture does not show it, it seems the same from above as well, where the exhaust bolts on seems the same location

The distance between the top stud and face of the flange look different If my eyes don't lie, I'd say thats why the new one is a shorter distance therefor making the dp closer to the engine.....IMHO

Is the first one a Turbonetics turbo? I also notice it has 12 blades vs 11. I guess maybe it's a function of the .63 A/R housing, but I didn't think it change the position like that.

I think I see what you're talking about. That's the same angle laid over both with the flange at 90*. I wouldn't be surprised if one of the turbine housings is an OE application. I've got a stage 3 that was originally a Mercedes Stage 1 then over bored to fit the bigger wheel.

I see it now, and that would explain the issue. It took me a few hours to cut and reweld the downpipe, and it gave me a chance to throw in a flex on the wastegate which I sort of wanted to do anyway. Sort of a pain though and I should be getting some better response now with this turbo.

by the way, if someone is looking to make some big power, a 60-1 compressor thrown on the old one would make for a pretty sweet turbo. Unfortunately it will need a rebuild as there is considerable side to side shaft play.

the simplist things seem to be turning into big hassles for me. the bolt holes on my wastegate stripped and now it seems that my WB02 is wanting to crossthread ... this sucks.

you're the only person in history to cross-thread a WB sensor. Hellen Keller could put an o2 sensor in without screwing it up.

As for the stripped hardware...v-bands are your god.

Seriously, that is what pisses me off so much. I have the tap I need at my parents house, but i just dont want to go over there right now. I had issues with the bung from day 1, having trouble getting it started. I guess this time was the last straw.

Those are the days i just put my tools down and take a break and tackle it the next day

LOL, how exactly do you cross thread an O2 sensor? Hope your luck turns for the better. My issues are always the little ones as well. Or I think most people are that way too.

Thats pretty much what I did. I have free time right now, so It wasn't like I needed it to get around.
