tacotaco manifold and turbo selection

I just made and intro post here: https://www.miataturbo.net/meet-greet-40/ct70-intro-66394/

I have a beat miata that I want to turbo with bandaids for minimal power increase just to increase driving pleasure. Thought I should just display that up front. 5-7psi is fine with me. Intercooled only if necessary, but probably wont need to be. The car only cost me 1000. I don't want a turbo setup that costs more than the car.

I have been reading for a while now here and still cant figure some things out. I decided my best manifold option is a ilovetacotaco cast manifold. My only real question is what turbo to use with this. I know its t3/t4 flange, but the flanges confuse me because I don't know how to match up a downpipe to this that would work.

What I need to know is what turbo (what used car or what china turbo) and what downpipe to mate up to my stock exhaust. Im ok with everything else.

I hate to ask for a spoon feeding but its confusing to see so many different turbine housing flanges.

If I have been unclear in anyway, here are the cliff notes...

Using tacotaco, what turbo and downpipe should I select. Thanks for the spoon feeding.

...good luck.

After such a strong intro post, you have to disappoint us like this?

I started with a shitty turbo kit and, having done that, I wouldn't wish that shit on anyone.

ct70 06-08-2012 08:45 AM

haha, sorry. I actually got the information I needed from the link above. Thanks for that. I have no issue with fabricating custom parts. $1000+/- should be achievable.

If you actually saw better pictures of my car, you wouldn't want to stick a high dollar turbo setup in it either. I just would like something to wake it up a bit until it turns to dust.

I appreciate the help and you can delete the thread if you would like. I got what I needed.

I hope you are a super talented mad scientist type fabricator, cause otherwise 1k is going to get you failaidz.

And I totally understand where you're coming from with the "don't want my mods to exceed the car price", but with older cars like ours its pretty much inevitable if you want a well sorted setup that can at least somewhat be reliable.

Braineack 06-08-2012 09:07 AM

1K could be acheived, without management...

You're speaking of the cast 1.6 taco taco manifold- correct? That's a t3 flanged That's not nearly as bad as the thin wall stainless for the 1.8. You're looking for a turbo tbird or svo mustang turbo in the JY. Those are the most common turbine housings for t3 flanges. Check shaft play, spin and housing walls before pulling.

Also grab anything attached to the turbo- wastegate/housing, actuator, downpipe/exhaust, intake pieces, oil and coolant lines. Those pieces will allow you to build on them in one form or another.

IMO adding the IC is so cheap vs. the benefit it hardly makes sense NOT to do it.

While you're there you should grab any 2.5" exhaust tubing you can find for both exhaust and IC (especially the bends). Also grab couplers- or OE intake tubing that's ~2.5".

I've been piecing together a 1.8 no-budget set up for a buddy's 95 and have basically built the downpipe and exhaust from Scion TC and Audi S4 OE exhaust leftovers. Both cars had mandrel bends (what you're looking for) in their stock exhaust. Just requires some time, cutting and welding.

Another option is using the stock header to build your manifold so you can focus those funds elsewhere in your build.

If he reads through the thread I posted, he'll find the ideal $150 turbo to match his manifold...the same T3 chinacharger I'm running.

ct70 06-08-2012 09:30 AM

Thanks for the reply m2cupcar, and yes cast tacotaco for the 1.6. Junkyard build is my preferred method, since my car would likely end with the junkyard when I'm done with it (I can post pictures of the extensive rust). I did see the China turbo in the link provided and might go with one of those. No management is in my scope, bandaids are my method. Used bandaids if possible.

Braineack 06-08-2012 09:32 AM

With how cheap it is to run a Megasquirt, I can't understand how anyone could ever want to give their car Aids.

duffbuster243 06-08-2012 09:39 AM

Under $1000 can be easily done as long as you have access to a welder and have some skills. I have a td05 14b setup pieced together for under $700 including MS1.

m2cupcar 06-08-2012 09:42 AM

Agreed- early miatalinks and MS1s are sub $300 now- sub $200 marketing depending.

I believe there is a new china t3 in the classifieds for $100 - in a part-out or mass for-sale thread. here My guess is it will be a bit laggy on a stock 1.6 since most of the churbos are t3/t4 and use larger turbine/compressor ARs and wheels. Includes lines too- not sure about WG. But cheap it is. edit: no waste gate/housing but you can pick up cast t3 vband housings cheap on ebay.

for a turbo kit about 1k this is how i would spend my money

130-140 ebay cast log manifold
250-300 used or diy ms1 or 2
100-150 used garrett t3 turbo posibly a china turbo
100-120 injectors
0-50 no intercooler or intercooler
50 bov
200 piping
75 walboro 190
100-150 wide band

i dont know :rofl::rofl::2cents::party::giggle::eek5::x:

triple88a 07-01-2012 05:43 PM

50 bucks for an intercooler and 50 bucks for a bov and 200 bucks for piping?

thenugg 07-01-2012 06:03 PM

im a noob, but i have a starion intercooler got for 35 bucks. and intercooler and exhaust piping (plus welding) for 200 is cheap imo... and i hear the 50 dollar ebay hks knock off isnt so bad... anyways this is how i would spend my money on a budget. hehehe

t3 and t4 are different flanges, t3\t4 turbo is a t3 turbine wheel\housing\flange with a t4 compressor wheel.

if I were to do it again from stock with the tactaco manifold, honestly I would stay with the aids. Too much time is needed to even get near the stock oem computer setup. Probably go with a cheap greddy emanage blue and make it an ultimate. if you don't plan to constantly be in boost I wouldn't worry about intercooler.

The only thing I would really recommend is a knock det and retard solution like a J&S safeguard. Pricey but well worth the money.

Theres a good ammount of turbos new and old that work with the T3 flange.

The main issue I don't like with the tactaco manifold is lack of waste provision. with the normal 5 bolt t3 garrett housing though I would look at making a downpipe that has external wastegate. as like in this image

What the hell I don't even....

A tacotaco manifold with bandAIDS and an EWG?

What the....

18psi 07-02-2012 08:37 PM

it says JDM though so its legit
