TD04 oil feed
Hi, I have a mk1 eunos and im installing a TD04L from a subaru on my 1.6. I have a -4AN steel braided oil feed pipe but was unsure whether it needs a oil restrictor.
do TD04 turbochargers need a restrictor, I was told journal bearing turbos wont need them but it wasn't a reliable source can anybody help me? thank you in advance |
Can't speak to that specific turbo, but the TD04H-15 used to be quite popular on the Miata (it was used in the Greedy kit) and we ran them without restrictors.
|
Sturovo, who supports lots of TD04 installs, counseled me to do so. I used a 1.5mm restrictor built into the -4AN adaptor at the CHRA and have had no issues in about 3k miles.

yes, oem subaru td04's do use a restrictor

Good info Joe and David.
I think it should be possible to run the run the Subaru 13t without a restrictor looking at the CHRA oil ways. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1421580457 The pathways to the bearing and thrust surfaces are small (~ 1-2 mm) and once the oil reaches the shaft the clearance for the oil to escape is tiny. I tested the oil flow through a TD04 with and without a restrictor and there was no significant difference. As Vlad pointed out Subaru use a 1.5mm restrictor with this turbo so for peace of mind I use one also. |
that's great news! thank you everybody! just bought a 1.5mm restrictor, hopefully should arrive soon!
I was told that a 3AN line I wouldn't need a restrictor but because as im running a 4AN id need one I was told this from a local mechanic but ive seen his work before and I didn't trust his advice on this. |
1) I will edit my post. I looked, and I also used a 1.5mm dia restrictor / adaptor as well, NOT 1.0mm
2) I think you made a wise choice to use a -4AN and restrictor rather than relying on tubing size and length. 3) Sturovo, thanks for the further research. |
Yeah I assumed you ment 1.5mm because 1mm are for ball bearing turbos and 1.5mm for journal bearings which is what TD04s have
|
just a quick question everybody, I received my restrictor today and the turbo is no longer burning ANY oil so im happy however there is a leak I cant figure out why.
I bought a M10x1.5 1.5mm restrictor adapting to a 4AN fitting perfect for the oil feed line to attach to, however it is leaking I believe from where the pipe joins the fitting. and ive tightened it as much as I dare but its the same. Is there anything high temperature I can apply to the threads to seal it? |
im putting my oil line together for a td04 and thought i post this. this will fit the block on 1.6 setups.

thanks guys, I fixed it in the end, I fitted the restrictor just before the turbo and all is good :) I have a
Block has a m10x1.5 with a 4AN adaptor > 40cm 4an pipe > 4an fitting to m10x1.5mm with a 1.5mm oil restrictor fitted right ontop of the turbo :) |
