Turbo questions! I know very open discussion'

Popping my forum cherry right here. See how it goes.... I have a stock 2000 Nb with the 1.8 has 103,000 on it timing belt and water pump just done at 100,000. I have located a protege with the 1.8 bpt turbo motor in it. I'm getting the whole car for 3000. Is this bpt a decent swap? Or is it more of a hassle? It comes with a standalone. Sparreco inner cooler gtr intake rx7 throttle body. If the whole swap is too much hassle can the turbo kit fit my 1.8? And would my stock 1.8 with its miles handle boost? If so how much? Ok that's a lot info. I apologize . I'm just super pumped to have the forum stuff rolling. Excited for input!

Yes to everything. Probably the most popular swap for the miata. As for how much boost, All of it.

$3000 is a steal! I'd do it OP

No, I sense the good in this one. He also has the highest props/posts ratio in the entire history of the forum (one of each.)

Not especially.

Or is it more of a hassle?
You'll find that a lot of the bolt-on mechanical bits don't line up properly when the engine is turned 90 degrees. Honestly, that same money will get you an entry-level kit from Bell or FM that will bolt right on without any custom fab work, save a hell of a lot of frustration, and give you a clear upgrade path for the future.

It comes with a standalone
That's nice.

If the whole swap is too much hassle can the turbo kit fit my 1.8?
Not without considerably custom fabrication.

And would my stock 1.8 with its miles handle boost?
At only 103,000 miles, that engine is just getting broken in. Do a compression test, and if it's anywhere close to factory spec, it'll be a fine candidate. If you'd said that the engine had 250,000 miles on it, then we might adopt a more cautious tone. But for a BP engine which has been well-maintained, 103,000 miles is nothing.

If so how much?
The obvious answer is "all of it", but in reality, that doesn't leave a lot of safety margin. For a daily driver, 80% of it is a good compromise between power and safety / longevity.

Joe. Thanks for the info. I'm still leaning towards the purchase of this protege with the bpt in it. Haven't officially laid my eyes on the car but I was informed that it has 17" gram lite wheels(offset probably wont work)(sell them probably)Brembo brakes. And I guess see if I can't piece something together. It may be a cast manifold away bolt up the turbo. Use his blow off and inner cooler. Pull the stand alone out of it and sell motor. Maybe? Idk.

Joe. Thanks for the info, but I really don't GAF about what you say. You may know what you're talking about and you seem pretty well known around here but your suggestion is against what I thought about doing so I'm going to do it anyway. I'm still leaning towards the purchase of this protege with the bpt in it. Haven't officially laid my eyes on the car so for all i know it could have fist-sized rust holes everywhere and a hole in a piston but I was informed that it has 17" gram lite wheels(offset probably are useless to me obviously) and Brembo brakes which are also useless. And I guess see if I can't piece something together. It may be a cast manifold away bolt up the turbo. I think its a good idea to pay $3k for a car in unknown condition that might have a used cast manifold and turbo on it that might work on my car with modifications. Following your advice and spending half that on a full kit from FM just makes too much sense.. Use his blow off and inner cooler. Pull the stand alone out of it because since stand alone is a cool phrase its worth while even if its an old failaids stand alone EMS.and sell motor. Maybe? Idk. But even though you know, and I don't know, I'm probably going to do something really stupid.

FTFY.

If you feel more knowledgeable you should probably act it and simply share. Like me for instance... I'm very knowledgeable in certain areas just not my Nb. Other areas like.... Well like I said before. Ask your girl about my knowledge. Like real good knowledge.

Check out this awesome PM this noob just sent me. Real big sirm yup you're much much more mature than I am, no question.

You ask for advice. It is given to you. You decide to entirely ignore it. What sort of response do you want? Do you want me to just hop on your dick cuz it ain't gonna happen.

Seems like the same story over and over. Noob asks question, we tell them to search, they get pissy, someone helps them, they don't listen, we tell them to stop being stupid, they get pissy.

TalkingPie 05-11-2013 01:21 PM

Poor Joe. He put in such a good effort and had high hopes. <sigh>

OP, Sparreco are great for inner coolers. What kind of outer cooler do you plan on running?

I'll like you even more if you call people niggers and talk like a 12 year old about fucking other members' girlfriends again. Between that, your ability to find the answer to the most basic and oft-asked questions on this forum, and your inner cooler knowledge, I just know you'll be a great asset to this forum.

By the way, that little number on the bottom right of each post is the props that other members have given to it. Taking a look at yours and then at turbofan's may give you a hint as to which way things are going for you here.

NastynateNBated 05-11-2013 01:24 PM

This noob is taking every shred of advice and running with it this protege I speak of is in fact 2000 bucks and after all the wonderful help I have received through you guys minus turbomycunthurts I may buy the car to simply salvage what I can use and sell the rest. Possibly the motor. Which has 9000 miles since rebuild on it

NastynateNBated 05-11-2013 01:28 PM

The parts money could even buy the whole set up I'm looking to install. What set should I go with? Sounds like a question for turbofan.... I will get back you you on that man.
