No, I sense the good in this one.

$2k for a bottom end that will support only 20-30% more power than the stock one? Because that's the only thing you would want to use from it.

Ah look what I started... I think I hurt his feelings. How quaint. He even has a few nicknames for me! I love nicknames. Maybe you can come up with a couple more? I'd love to hear them. Sing them to me.

You can get a brand new begi kit for $1500 bro. Buy a ebay intercooler and a decent emu and you're already miles ahead of that protegay bullshit. Where's hustler when u need him?

I thank you for this spec. So the bpt motor is speced at 20-30% more power handling? That's good to know. So you don't think I could use the stand alone management out of it? Or do fm or bell kits come with some sorta mega squirt? I know that what I'm looking at is unknown and used. It is just something I stumbled onto and don't wanna miss a deal. Guy is also throwing in greddy inner cooler (may fit. May not) garret 60 or 63 mm turbo still in bag in original box. I am in no way not listening or refusing to take anybody's advice on this forum btw.
If you would like to know what's in a BEGi kit to see if it's a better option, I would suggest visiting their website and checking them out. Check out FM as well. Also, please... It's an intercooler. You keep saying stand alone like that gives us some inkling of WTF it is. Do you know how many different stand alone EMS systems are on the market? Find out what it is. Do you have pics of this bpt protege? If the car is in good shape and you're really stumbling onto a strong running turbo protege for $2k your best bet would be to buy/part to make a profit or buy/flip to make a profit. I'll repeat what Joe said: it is likely not worth the hassle of using the parts on the protege. Now stop typing. Read. Visit some websites. Go look at the protege you're thinking about buying. Breathe. Respond. |
Intercooler* yes that's right ( goof) I'm going to look at it tonight. I will try and get as much detailed info as I can. Pictures what not. I will check out that site. Thanks. Look forward to ripping around this summer if all works out!

There is almost zero chance that whatever standalone he has is plug-n-play, since not even all miatas have the same engine harness. So it's really not that useful when you can get a PnP unit from several of the supported vendors from $600-$800.
But seriously, stop asking these dumb questions and start reading. Go look at the car but by no means buy it. This is not something you want to jump in to, so put on your big boy pants and start doing some research. |
My only comment is this. If you like the protege but it, but buy it as something to drive and enjoy while you take your time with the Miata.
The hassle of reengineering everything is way too severe. If you take your time and shop used stuff (once you know what used stuff fits your application and goals) you find some fantastic deals. I picked up a BEGI-S kit used WITH a 2.5" down pipe to tailpipe exhaust for $400. The exhaust manifold still had its original paint. Hold your horses, or "slow your roll" as the kids are saying these days. Read build threads, do research. You will probably actually finish your project if you do that. Otherwise you will be on here selling parts from your failed build in 8 months. |
OP, if you want things to run more than just this summer, I suggest you check out this thread first and cross-check what's on that BPT motor to see what you'll actually be able to use:

Not especially. You'll find that a lot of the bolt-on mechanical bits don't line up properly when the engine is turned 90 degrees. Honestly, that same money will get you an entry-level kit from Bell or FM that will bolt right on without any custom fab work, save a hell of a lot of frustration, and give you a clear upgrade path for the future. Not without considerably custom fabrication. At only 103,000 miles, that engine[already in your possession] is just getting broken in. Do a compression test, and if it's anywhere close to factory spec, it'll be a fine candidate. If you'd said that the engine had 250,000 miles on it, then we might adopt a more cautious tone. But for a BP engine which has been well-maintained, 103,000 miles is nothing.

Joe. Thanks for the info. I'm still leaning towards the purchase of this protege with the bpt in it.
