What air filter are you using and why?

I have a cheap one that came from only god knows where and am thinking of going for something a little less knockoff/ebay. Mnetters seem to love k&N filters, evo guys like Perrin foam filters and Amsoil's, and honda guys like to run with chicken wire on their tb's.

So mine is an ebay special (I think) and I am using it because it was convenient. It keeps filth, bugs, and sand out but I don't think the flow is very good.

K&N from eBay. Because it was cheap.

Filters are a compromise - the better flowing it is, the more shit it lets through. But honestly, it really makes no significant difference.

I'm running a K&N right now just because that's all they had around the shop at the time, however, I am going to to switch in the near future.

I would argue that the test is flawed for 2 reasons:
1. No two dyno results are the same. Two of the filters got better numbers than running no filter. If someone could explain a reason other than differing tests I would be interested.
2. It's irrelevant to most Miata owners because that car makes 400hp.

Interesting test, though. I suppose it has some use on filters that are significantly off of the "no filter" run, but anything close to it I would say is just down to the run.

EDIT: Actually, I find it rather interesting how all the torque ratings are skewed much more than the HP ratings.

K&N because it came with the BEGi kit. Amsoil filters are paper, and awesome for filtration, but I think K&N is good enough.

inferno94 02-27-2011 10:59 PM

Same as hustler, the K&N that came from BEGI.

aem dryflow. they are washable and dont get oily dirt slime like the k&n.

it was readily available in a 4" inlet.

I'm about ready to wash it though.

I have a k&n now because I have a 20% discount at work. And the ghetto filter that I made last year was too JDM.

kotomile 02-28-2011 12:01 AM

An older pre-dryflow AEM filter. It has a little velocity stack molded into the base. Nice touch.

Faeflora 02-28-2011 03:44 AM

I worm geared a sock onto my compressor inlet. I have big feet ;)

Lokiel 02-28-2011 06:29 AM

While searching eBay I found the 3A Racing filter which had an interesting link from Auto Salon Magazine, Issue 51, January 2007 that compared many of the leading air filters, including the 3A Racing air filter, K&N filter and AEM filter. See
http://www.australianauto.com.au/HTM...hoot%20Out.pdf

It was surprising to see how badly my AEM filter rated with regard to air flow against the other filters. The 3A Racing filter was ranked 2nd in filtration and 1st in air flow so I figured that had to be worth a few extra "killer-wasps" AND it only cost A$40 DELIVERED from eBay so why not?

apparently Amsoil and Injen are now buddybuddy and sell together the amsoil blue filters.

for which you can get water and big particle-repellent prefilter socks!

Braineack 02-28-2011 10:20 AM

K&n ru-5111

revlimiter 02-28-2011 10:34 AM

Same as above, I use the K&N that came with my kit.

K&N from amazon. Best prices I could find for them. Even better than eBay. :bigtu:
