Hello im new to the whole miata scene, i just got a '94 miata from my neighbor and i was wonderin what are some things i could possibly do to get the most horsepower out of it. its a 1.8L and it is completely stock. im not worried about costs or anything like that and i was wanting to do a twin turbo but didnt know if it was a good idea or not

that twin turbo setup is a great idea, in fact, i don't think its ever been done before on a miata, it will probably be a lot more efficient then one turbo since its two, your pockets are deep be the first! :bigtu:

Turbo or supercharger. Nitrous is gay. There are your choices. Twin turbo can be done but it's too much trouble for too little benefit.

And dont even think of wasting your time with I/H/E. Minimal gains and overwhelmingly gay and most likely loud.

what do you consider significant HP? and what is your budget? what is the # ammount of $$ you are willing to spend now vs later...?
what does the car have done to it now? do you wear girls panties when no one can see you? are you related to hustler? have you ever turboed a car before? have you ever driven a turbo miata?
now answer those questions and you may get some help around here...

TurboTim, a member on this forum, has done a twin turbo setup. For a while a picture of it was his avatar. But Tim is a professional fabricator who likes to do this kind of thing just to make the rest of us sick with envy. :bigtu:

Realistically, you can make enough power with a single turbo to break any transmission Mazda has ever put into a passenger car. And from a more practical standpoint, a properly sized turbocharger, with adequate intercooling, fuel and timing management can easily make a safe, reliable 200 - 225 HP in a manner that is actually useful and drivable. It's always a trade-off of sorts- you could throw a GT55 turbo onto your engine an make 600 HP, but it would take days to spool up and probably explode during the second dyno pull.

I notice that you're in Texas. If you are serious about money being no object, I suggest you drive to Spring Branch (a bit north of San Antonio) and pay a visit to Bell Engineering. They are the big player in turbocharged Miatas, and offer a variety of pre-packaged kits ranging from mild (5 PSI, probably 150 HP or so) to, as they somewhat humorously put it, "military-grade" (probably 250 HP for starters.)

Welcome and please just browse around abit and check this stuff out. We have all the flavors you could ever want. It is like the baskin Robbins of the Turbo miata world, taste everything and then determine if you have enough money to make your sundea the way you want to. ;)

If you aren't worried about costs, just call flying miata and hand them your wallet, they will empty it for you.

That's a bit harsh. :-) They will empty your wallet, but think of it as a service. The trick in most of this stuff is the sundry items. You think, ok, top of the line turbo kit, drop 6k. But then you'll want injectors. Then you'll NEED cooling, then you'll want an extraction hood, then a tranny. At that point, it's a bigger turbo, etc. Since you've goit that much invested, you might as well stroke the motor... And of course, brakes and suspension to stay on the road, bracing to keep the car together, and it's not hard to drop many many many times what the car is worth - and folks do it.

I'd suggest getting an idea of what you want to do before you do it. It will change, over time, but if you buy stuff at random you'll buy a lot of stuff over and waste money when you could be driving.

Also, few people have any idea just how fast a 200 hp miata is. Remember, they are only ~100-105 wheel horse power (~40 hp lost in the drive train) stock. So, going to 200 is literally DOUBLE.

My buddy is used to old cameros, and thought there was no point getting in a 200-300 hp car, since his 400 hp car wasn't even that quick, but he was mightily impressed.

Number one: Find a local miata club, or talk to whoever sells the kit you're going to buy, find someone who has a car and drive it. It answers a lot of questions very quickly.
