What kind of turbo can I use with early corky bell's IHI kit
 

I have a early corky bells cortech IHI turbo kit with his intercooler. But the turbo is leaking coolant (smoking white out of exhaust). Anybody know what kind of turbo besides the IHI will fit on the manifold? Or what rebuild kit do it need? Also any resource for parts will be helpful also and thanks. BTW the kit is for 90-93 1.6

So you finally isolated the leaking coolant to the turbo cartridge, huh? That's good.

As for what turbo to use, call up BEGi; they're easy to get a hold of and talk to.

the areocharger is no longer produced unfortunately mate. I dont know if there are standard turbos available that can be swapped in or not. You should call begi

well The thrust bearing on the block was bad. I just replaced the motor and the guy i bought the motor from he replaced all the seal and water pump. The front main seal was leaking and guess what the crank pulley came out without even trying hard (not torq) No damaged to the keyway or anything and I also replaced the head thinking it's a valve seal,but still white smoke. So for sure the turbo seal is bad. The turbo is a IHI turbo.

so pull the water lines to the turbo and see if that doesn't fix it....there are no "seals" for the coolant, just a hollow housing.

That's what I understood about the CHRA design. I think the only way for coolant to leak into the exhaust flow is for the CHRA to crack... which isn't very likely since the turbo would probably self-destruct.

$98 isn't bad for a rebuild kit.

The IHI RHB5 that Corky used certainly isn't a bad turbo, just old. It spools quick and is good up to around 12 psi.

IIRC there was a T-bird compressor upgrade for it. Might be worth looking at if you're looking for more power, especially if you are not going to do the upgrade yourself.

The piece between the intake part and the exhaust, where all the oil and water lines go to...

so rebuilt kit won't fix it then?

if you think it's leaking coolant, then no. the coolant portion of the CHRA is sealed, meaning it's just a hollow area where the coolant passes through to cool the turbo.

if you think it really it leaking coolant, then pull both the coolant lines and join them together off the turbo. then see if the same thing accurs.

my guess is that it will. sometimes even burning oil from a turbo looks white. but do that test first before you buy the rebuild kit. or discuss in detail with corky bell.

IIRC Aerodyne's are only air cooled (the oil is self contained - no oil feed or return line)

would a that damaged CHRA effect idle?

Failed turbo or no, your compression sucks!

Knowing compression is real low, which is more likely, your turbo is ingesting coolant, or the motor is?

It has compression man and let's just leave it at that.

I just notice on this diagram the sides have oil and coolant lines on same side. But the way the turbo was hook up the sides of the turbo is running two coolant lines. One of them goes rightside of the water thermo neck and the other goes to the lines leftside of the power steering pulley. And the Oil feed and oil return lines seems to be right.

white smoke is fixed. But now the idle is going up and down none stop after it warms up and drive it for about 10mins. I have to find my vac gauge, but I don't think it has a vac leak anymore.
